Just a quick question. With all this lovely weather we are having what do you guys do when you have a power cut? How long can our babies go without heat? What alternatives are there? My lights keep flickering with the lightening and it suddenly occurred to me that I have no clue what to do. Help please, just in case! |

Kind of on topc: the big burms in florida manages some how to survive the extreme cold of a bad winter with snow and ice ect, dont know how?!
But it does go to show that they are not as fragile as we make them out to be :) |

just fill the viv with loads of aspen/torn up newspaper to help hold the heat. I do have a nice silent genny but I cant leave that running while I go to work |

I wouldn't worry too much about it snakes handle cold better than we give them credit there are thousands of stories of snakes escaping and turning up in gardens months later so they must have some survival ability. :) |

In extremes I would personally just stick them in the car with heating on and transfer them to anyone with an electricity supply. |

Ive been digging through my cupboards and have found a large. thick fleece that in the event of a power cut I can wrap over both vivs & leave their airholes clear at the back. Ive named it my emergency snakey wrap! |

I know of a Boa that was kept at room temperature for a year before it finally became ill and was discovered how badly it was kept.
The danger is winter. The power is likely to go out when its cold and most central heating systems cant run without electric too so cold will inevitably creep in. I have been looking into converting a UPS (Uninterrupted power supply) to backup the power supply to the viv stack. failing that or a generator then its pack up and move them into the car once things drop too cold or if the power is going to be off for an extended period (start the engine, stick them in, heater on) find somewhere to plug them in. |

Well, luckily we have never had a power cut in this area (Kent) that has lasted longer than a few hours before. We dont have floods etc either. It's just Ive never had things that rely on power before (Im a cat person) so it's never been an issue before. As long as they are ok for a short time then I feel reassured they will be fine. |

Heat helps to digest the food so if you've just fed them and the power goes out that'd be bad news
If it was just a normal power cut (if there is such a thing Lol) and your animals are without heat for a long time they could go into a tauper, kinda like a state of suspended animation.
When I had my cinny and mojave delivered in april they arrived stone cold, like 50f cold and I spaz'd out. Obviously it's not ideal but they can stand "some" extremes of cold. Most important thing is to warm them up SLOWLY. Leave them in a warm room until they begin to move a bit then you can get them on some heat, say mid 80s they upto normal temps
I sat with the two of them for over 3 hours to make sure they were ok |

think this is all you can really do,keep the heat in by not opening windows,hot water bottles might work for rubs etc.
If the power went out for afew days,Im sure they would be fine.Any longer and i guess a generator would be the only thing to work :)

If it went out for that long I would pack them in rubs and go stay with my mum! I thought they had to have the heat to digest their dinner but Im still so new to all this so Im a bit paranoid! |

The only thing I can offer here off the top of my head is that if your power goes out for any length of time (days+), don't feed your snake, even if it is due a feed. The lack of heat will just cause them to regurge. ;) |
