Hi,

I have a 17mnth old male royal python, have owned him for several months now, he's been feeding fine up until 5 weeks ago since then he has refused the 4 feeds ive offered him.
I've been told this could be down to him wanting to mate, especially as there is a female in the viv next to his. My only concern is he lost a bit of weight. He has gone from 610g to 583g in 5 weeks and he hasn't had a pooh, so that cant be a reason for weight loss. He is still active. probably more active recently and the only other strange thing is he is preferring to curl up in the cold hide rather than the hot hide where he used to always be.

His setup is a 3ft viv with hot and cold hides, a guarded statted heatlamp with a hot side of around 31c and cold end of around 26c. And lots of foliage for him to hide in.
He was being fed rat weaners every 7 ish days

So my question is when do you start to worry and do something about it or do i just leave him and keep offering every now and again?

I'm not overly worried, as I know that they fast and stuff. What concerns me is he is already losing weight and he hasn't pooed so no obvious reason for dropping the weight.

I'm happy to leave him and keep trying every now and again. I just wondered when other ppl start to get worried and take action such as offering other food, braining and other methods.

He`s doing what Royals do, i know how you feel as when my 2nd Royal started to do this a few years ago i was racked with nerves as well.
They aren`t consitant feeders, they feed and they fast, sometimes this comes on in the autumn sometimes not.
This is where ownership over time brings experience and new owners rightly, due to inexperience panic.
What i do with all mine is weigh them after they have been to the toilet so you have an empty wieght. Then when they stop you can check to make sure they dnt lose to much.
What you also need to take into account which isn`t stated very much is that most Royals will get to a certain wieght and they never get any further. I have a 7 year old Pastel who is just over 1kg.
You`ll probably get people telling you to try smaller food sizes, braining etc but your probably best just to give him sometime, he will eat when he gets hungry they aren`t stupid.
If its any consolation i have a female Bumblebee who ate a rat at the end of October and had another at the beginning of June. I believe that Kelfezond has one thats just gone a full year.
