Couch, its worth buying some cheap digital thermometers to measure the surface temperature with.
i dont think a stat probe would be much use that far away, lamp would probably be on a lot higher than normal and would be up and down with the temp circulating. |

good point and well said.I think we all followed your lead when you asked about the probe position
as well as installing some digital thermometershttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LCD-Temperature-Display-SH105_W0QQitemZ400022686984QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects?hash=item5d2335cd08&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A30 the probe still needs to move. were it is if its set to say even 85F by the time the viv heats to that, it could be 95F+ under lamp???? where as if it is moved to under the lamp and set to say 88 then you know that the hottest area is 88F or close to it allowing for an margin of error on the stat dial. |

Posted - 26/05/2009 : 23:44:04 as above. if you can move your lamp out from the sides it would be better all round. you increase the surface area ( base area) of warm side of viv and be able to manage temps of cold side a bit more. Also as lee said you'll get more ventilation around the lamp . this in turn will allow a more balanced convection current giving you a better and more stable ambient temp. I would suggest a 2.5"-4" gap from your guard to the wall. it should also make it a bit easier if you ever need to change your lamp.and your snake should not get stuck if it ever makes it that far. |

Posted - 26/05/2009 : 22:54:29 i would move the lamp away from the sides of the viv then you would get more ventilation around the gaurd and have the stat probe under the lamp |
