Got to the OH's yesterday and went to check on Dio and found him like this 
He's finally going to shed after 2 months of looking like he was going to.
We noticed he got what looks like a completely missing scale under his chin. Will this come back with each shed? |

I think Dio has been taking lessons from some Boas as he ate his mouse back end first. I was going to take a photo but by the time i got the camera he'd eaten it. Next time i'll keep it on me and i'll try to film the strike. |

Checked Dio over and his eye's normal and his necks totally normal now. He's so nice and shiny now.
There hasn't been any mites on him for a few days which is a good sign i hope.
I also got my first feed photo tonight The strike was so fast it made me jump.
I'm one happy snake mummy. |

He's finally shed at last lol. He's currently refusing to come out his hide so will have to wait to see if the eye damage has gone. |

Checked on Dio when i got in and found him back in his water bowl but his eyes have cleared so hopefully he will shed in the next day or 2. I got him out for a bit and couldn't see any mites on him this time.
I took some photos, though there not very good as he kept moving, of his little wound. it's actually on his neck rather than his chin.
Also for a couple of months now he's had some damage to his left eye cap.
This should go when he shed's shouldn't it? |

Haha, you'll have to get some air stones in that bowl, make him a little hot tub. I agree with reptiledanny, a stripped out viv wil make it a lot easier to get rid of the mites.
The 'missing' scale in the centre of the chin was never there, its a scaleless section to allow expansion of the lower jaw/throat etc. It may be more prominent at the moment due to mite damage, if a mite has gotten into that soft defenseless area and feasted, it could be swollen and standing out more. |

We've been regularly boiling the wood and then baking it dry in the oven to kill off anything on there. Once Dio's shed then we will sort his viv out. |

Also as far as the pieces of wood go give them a soak in a mild bleach solution and the give them a zap for a couple of minutes in the microwave should them be might free for when you put them back in Dio's viv |

that may be so, but you will find them in the substrate and in the wood you have in there, so is best to keep them on paper towel that can be changed every day, and just a water bowl and 2 hides that the mites cannot get into like wood, and can be easily cleaned. makes life so much easier for you made it a whole lot easier for me  |

We've got zoo med mite off stuff that seems to be working it's just trying to break the cycle and stop them laying eggs. We only seem to be finding a couple of small ones on him every now and then. |

Hiya, great pics but If he's got mites you need to have him in a bare viv. kitchen roll substrate and 2 plastic hides and water bowl. thats it. Check the health section for different treatments. I've been lucky but my local rep shop swears by four paws Nature's reptile protector. good luck with shed. |

Yeah unfortunately he still has mites so spends alot of time in his water bowl.
Thats good that it will come back. I thought he had burnt himself when i first saw it on tuesday but after looking at it closely you can see the whole scales gone. It had definately never been there before. I was going to try to take a photo of it but he probably won't like being picked up at the moment. |

Good luck with the shed - yes, any scale damage will usually regenerate itself, and may look far worse before a shed. However, is the bare patch more noticeable when he's feeding, and shrinks to a sort of 'pleat' under his chin afterwards? This is normal - it really is a sort of 'gusset' to allow for expansion while eating - sorry if you know that already lol but I thought I'd mention it because when I first noticed this on Shahi, I thought there was something wrong with his scales until I checked with feeding pics of other snakes,and someone else posted a while back with pics of the same thing to ask if anything was wrong. |
