Posted - 23/07/2012 : 15:34:47 ok, so I know that CB is Captive Bred and CF is Captive Farmed but is there actually any increased chance of problems with a CF if bought from a reptile shop?
I have 3 CF snakes altogether all from a reliable reptile store who said they keep them secure and make sure they are eating before putting them on sale.
So basically this thread is asking if there is actually any increased risk if you buy a CF snake from a reliable source? |

Posted - 24/07/2012 : 18:02:09 CF is eggs collected from the wild and hatched in captivity, WC are wild caught animals. |

Posted - 24/07/2012 : 08:59:18 I wouldn't support CF and defo not WC if I knew about it. It's not just that your taking Animals from the wild and that could carry risks, and that there are so many lovely pets here that have been bred here for many generations. It's that your taking a wild Animal away from it's home. Where it was born and grew up. I don't think it's right.
Saying that I think some Animals do better than others having been taken away from their homes. Some might do even better than being in the wild.
And I do get that if we hadn't taken Animals out of the wild in the first place then we'd have nothing.
But I still can't see it being a good or reasonable thing to do. As long as the Animal isn't rare in the wild then I suppose it isn't a bad thing, but it seems irrisponsable... to me anyway. Like the Animals themselves aren't being considered. But maybe I'm wrong about that. I admit that I don't have nearly as much experience as others do here so maybe I'm missing something. Maybe they'd thank us for it if they could : ) |

Posted - 24/07/2012 : 00:26:55 I personally think that CF are better for one thing, you don't know completely what type of morph you are buying at a young age. CF could be Het this or Het that. Where as with breeders, you get what you see, an average normal.
I just have to check closely and give a solid 3 months quarantine away from the others. (Just cannot believe I am on 5 already lol, only had snakes 3 and a half months but had some experience with bigdon's royal for a good 6 months before that.)
I am moving soon so no more until I have moved and settled in. (I think I may have to give the royals time to adapt to the newer environments when moving) |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 22:17:08 Yeah ofc bob,but when it gets to the point where theres so many cb ones.taking from the wild becomes less important.
taking normals from the wild, when theres plenty cb ones and even un wanted animals on classifieds. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 21:41:38 Without CF and WC animals a lot of morphs wouldn't exist in collections and the blood lines would be inbred so badly the snakes would have three heads and gills by now.
I'm not saying its a good thing to take animals from the wild but if there is an abundance of them in the wild then considerate removal can actually be good for the ecology of that area and is much better than having to cull an abundant animal like we have to do with deers in this country as they have no predators. Not saying this is the case with Royals but I've not heard any reports of them been endangered or rare. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 20:41:25 I'm pretty sure mine is CF. It was not sold as that and all I was told was it was from a local breeder but since looking into it more it appears it's not from a breeder but CF. But, she is fine, she's not struck for me once, she eats and sheds well and seems settled in.
I wouldn't buy CF consciously because of the reasons above. Although if it was something really rare and difficult to get hold of I'd consider it but if there's lots of availability for CB then I'll go for those and pay the small amount extra. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 19:07:08 CB is better and Kelfezond is right. However just cuz its cb don't mean it's been treated right. It might have been treated far worse then a cf one.
So yeah, guess it depends who/where you buy from.As not everyones lvl of care is the same etc etc |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 18:00:59 I'm not flaming you by the way - after all mine could be CF and the person in the shop could have lied, you never know.
BUT, I think so long as people are buying, then they will keep supplying CF, Which, lets face it, is better than WC.
Either way, I only ever consiously buy CB. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 16:38:20 I meant Captive lol, I will edit the post.
Well it usually depends, I bought Athena and Cyrus on sale and they are CF, I am looking closely on them to be sure that they are Mite-free and such and Have not seen anything just yet, I know there are other risks that are not mites but I will have to see about them :)
Thanks anyway! |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 16:14:24 Captive, not capture.
I out of principal wouldn't by cf, buying them is supporting it happening and with many cb snakes available it really isn't necessary. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 15:58:13 There is always more risk from a CF than a CB, the amount of risk depends on the person you bought the snake from, if it was quarantines properly to make sure it didn't have any illnesses or mites and was properly fed and handled then there's not really any difference. But I think most CF animals aren't really quarantines at shops, or if they are not for the right amount of time. |
