Posted - 01/08/2012 : 21:15:07 Is anyone watching that "britains strangest pets" on channel 5. They always pick the most irresponsible examples to give the exotic pet trade a bad name. They had some guy on with a boa, he was going on about how cool it was owning dangerous animals and discussing the ways they could harm people. They obviously found this guy coz he had been in the paper when he lost his boa and had everyone in Essex terrified.
They did have a monitor breeder on from Gateshead who Im sure was recently in practical reptile mag. He obviously knew what he was doing, but decided to take one of his biggest lizards to a local pet shop to "show it off" and it got quite stressed and aggressive. Didnt seem like the best idea in the world. |

Posted - 03/08/2012 : 12:42:08 It is madness, even on that essex reptile show thing they managed to find all the loonies of the day to appear, only a few genuinely sane people appeared on it, the guy who kept rattlers, he had his head screwed on, the lift did not go to the top floor with everyone else.
They miss that the vast majority of people that own retiles are not flamboyant head cases but just normal people that you would never even realise unless they tell you. For example me, I work with the public and they are nearly all very surprised when they find out I keep exotic animals. |

Posted - 02/08/2012 : 21:53:07 The problem is when these programs look for people to use on the shows they look through past news stories (such as the escaped boa) and then follow up on the people. They know that if they find the most extreme cases it will make "entertaining viewing" for the general public. Its a load of crap! |

They can digest cooked meat, not a single reason they couldn't other than getting them to eat cooked meat which may be a challenge.
The reason you dont defrost in boiling/hot water is very quickly boiling/hot water cools and leaves a nice core of ice in the middle of the now slightly warm at the edges rat, snake eats it, it quickly loses the heat and then the ice lowers the snakes core temperature and it either regurges or dies.
Always best to defrost the rat fully before you heat it up if thats what you need to do. |

Also, boiling a kettle to defrost a rat? Pretty sure the rat would start to cook? I have always read it's best for rats to defrost over time, rather than speeding it up. Not sure what the reasons for this is other than partially cooking it.

Don't think many of the reptiles on the show were kept the best that they could have been.
Another idiotic show giving reptiles a bad name. |
