o Yeah I'll stick with Dan...
o So Dan lets start with what got you into exotics first

Dan Davis
o I'd always been absolutely fascinated by all kinds of reptiles and amphibians from quite an early age - I went on holiday with friends parents to Cornwall when I was 12. We visited a zoo whilst were were there, and there was a lady holding a visitor interaction session, with a large reticulated python. She asked for a volunteer from the crowd to hold this retic, and picked me. I was a little nervous, but as she draped it across my shoulders, I remember being amazed at it's weight, and I'd never experienced anything like the feeling of it's muscles moving back and forth to move around my shoulders - it was literally fascinating!

o That's a great first experience! So did you get your first reptile as a kid?

Dan Davis
o Nope! We had cats you see, so my pet keeping was confined to fish - which is good as a kid as it teaches you responsibility in terms of daily feeding and weekly cleaning. I had a 250litre long tank, so cleaning was a massive chore!

o Sounds like a big job! What fish did you keep?

Dan Davis
o Nothing fancy, I had around 15 goldfish, half a dozen cold water fantails, and a few dozen minnows and dannio's. That tank actually burst on me, reducing my fish stock down to 6 goldfish kept in my quarantine tank.

o Oh dear! Shop when did you finally get your first reptile?

o Xmas 2011 - After a chance visit to a newly opened petshop close to me. I knew snakes required a heatsource, and I always imagined the cost of providing appropriate housing and heat to be very expensive, plus the cost of the snake itself. A sles assistant caught me wide-eyeing a common boa, so got talking to me about the cost of their starter kits, and I was pretty surprised to be able to walk out with a snake and a heated vivarium for a little under £200

o I didn't get the boa in the end, I came home with the very originally named Monty - a little CB11 Royal Python

o So this common boa was your first?

o See above

o Ah you had to wait a very long time then for your first! How many reptiles have you obtained since that Christmas?

Dan Davis
o Just one more since Monty - a male Fire Royal Python from Bob Clark. I have two more coming very shortly too, a female Fire hatchling, and as confirmed this morning, a female Pastel.

o So you're getting into your morphs then? Thinking of breeding one day?

Dan Davis
o Prior to 8 months ago, I had no idea this world of Morphs existed - I mean I knew about albinism, but had no idea about the handful of other naturally occurring genetic mutations - so to me it's more a case of building up a nice stock of pet snakes, that are all interesting varieties of one species that I've learned a lot about and am confident in keeping - much alike my fancy fantail fish as a kid! I've been giving serious consideration to breeding recently, as a way of building up my little collection with more interesting variations of Royal Python colours and patterns. Monty (who proved to be a female when I had her probed) isn't so little anymore - she's up to 1300 grams now, so depending on how I feel later in the year, I may introduce my male Fire to her and see what happens!

o So any other species on your mind?

o Of snakes? Well, yeah actually. I still have a soft spot for various locales of Boas, so I can certainly imagine myself coming home with some form of BCI or BCC one day. I adore Green Tree Pythons too, they are gorgeous and equally as fascinating! As for the amphibious world, I think a handful of Poison Dart Frogs would be amazing. An axolotl is next on my shopping list though

o So quite the collection to come! What do you do when you're not caring for your snakes?

Dan Davis
o I'm a bit of a busy boy outside of the office. A lot of this summer has been spent preparing for Total Warrior 2012 (which I complete yesterday) so lots of running, cycling and rock climbing (well, bouldering really). I'm also a keen snowboarder and am lucky to have an indoor slope about a mile away from my house, so can often be found there. My main hobby though is classic car restoration and mechanics - I can mostly be found in my garage working on various cars and bikes, which currently consist of a 1978 Mini 1275GT, and a Vespa scooter. So with work on top of that, snakes are an ideal pet for me!

I still have scars on my knuckles and a bonnet catch shaped dent in the back of my head from years of working on my old minis. I miss them....sort of ! |

Oh yeah push button start, never failed me yet. Though its MOT is due on Wednesday and a tractor flicked a stone up and smashed the headlight, emergency repair required. |
