Hi all,
What sort of substrate do you all prefer? I realise that it's very much a preference thing but is there one substrate that is more popular than the rest?
Also, given your choice of substrate, what's the best depth to have in your viv?

but yeah Megazorb is absolutley fantastic, i will be using it for all future purchases after the initial quarantine period |

lotabob, the substrate was from a shop we later found out was infested with snakemites, apparently the shop owner was treating all his snakes but matilda did not have mites untilo we used the substrate then suddenly she did, we have no other snakes, also when we pored out the substrate thats when we saw that there was mites in it, quite a lot actually so in the bin it went along with half a tin o callingtons lol |

I always use aspen, but keep new arrivals on kitchen towel in their isolation area so I can more easily check for mites should they have any, if you are using substrate and heat mats don't make the substrate too deep or it will insulate your snake from the heat |

I use megazorb too, I absolutely LOVE it.
(You can't get snake mites from substrate, unless the substrate has already been in close proximity to an infested snake. Snake mites are only snake mites they infest nothing else). |

I used kitchen roll for hogs but then swapped all of them and have eddy on news paper wanna try and find some imprinted stuff . Used lining paper before but its a big roll curled up and trying to cut it to size in a rub is a nitemare and hogs poo way too much! |

yeah it is horse bedding, its brilliant stuff, really cheap, looks quite good in the viv as well, but more importantly it works really well which is more important. |

The shredded paper isn't that bad kelf, its cheap and so long as its not to deep they don't burrow much. Apart from the corns, they would burrow into rock if they could! |

Never heard of Megazorb before! Just googled it and it seems to be small animal/horse bedding, is that right?
It looks quite interesting as it says its high temperature dried so should kill any bugs. Where abouts do you get it from? |

I was using aubiose
But have moved to unprinted news paper off cuts
And kitchen roll for the young ones
Seemed like I was forever hoovering up aubiose |

Aspen for older snakes the younger ones get news paper, possibly start using news paper for them all

How is shredded paper to use? I've always considered it because we have absolutely tons of it but I always figured the beasts would burrow to the bottom and just poop there against the enclosure floor. |

I used to use Aubiose but found it too messy, switched to lining paper but found it non-absorbant and so I've changed to newspaper - nice and cheap, easy to clean and no mess stuck into my carpet!
However I have used wood chips and bark and all the common substrates, I would say if you're using heat lamps the deeper the better really but if you're using heatmats or cables I'd stick to about 1cm depth |
