Posted - 05/11/2012 : 03:37:05 Hey guys, Has anyone else noticed that people on the reptile forums are currently arguing over the way BHB house their snakes.
There are so many people who go on those forums who think they know it all, it really annoys me (if anyone here goes on there I am not addressing this to you)
Anyone here who watches Snake-bytes TV and agrees that the snakes are being housed at an acceptable standard? I personally see no issues in the welfare of his snakes. |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 16:06:29 while i do know he does a huge ammount to promote/safeguard reptile keeping and helping his customers with problems ect there is no excuse at all to keep a 16ft burm in that size enclosure. he said in his rant that she was worse in a bigger enclosure if this is true then there will have been something wrong with said enclosure. yes he has a huge ammount more experiance than i do but its common sense that you cant keep a snake that size in a rub, he states in one of the episodes that burms and rectics need massive enclosures yet he doesnt do this himself. as the big name breeder that he is he should be setting an example with the giants new people will see her in that drawer an think its acceptable to keep them this way. as i said before i have no problem with 99% of his animals as they have room to move an thermoregulate ect as they should. i used to watch the show but went off it after seeing them repeatedly filming each other getting tagged which is unfair on the snakes, yes them gettting tagged would show new owners its not that bad but they have gone too far with it to be honest. i look forward to him posting another thing once hes had time to think about it as his reason for keeping her in there so far is not good enough. hope that doesnt come across as argumentative as its not meant to be, just my opinions on this |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 14:58:29 Brian has responded via his Facebook page and on twitter
I guess this is the issue when you are at the top of the hobby, everyone scrutinises every little thing you do. It must be like having a giant target on your back 24/7. This is more apparent when, like Brian you let the whole world into your life and work via social media etc
The sad thing is that people easily forget, or don't see all the great work that folk like Brian do for the hobby and industry. It's far easier to focus on the negative.
I guess this is why you don't hear much from the other big breeder anymore, Eugene bessette, Dave and Tracey barker, Ralph Davies and the like. I'm sure they've all gone through similar during their careers |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 14:05:57 Have followed all 3 threads on this over on RFUK so will lay down some ground rules here quickly :)
I have no problem with us discussing it, that's fine. But we won't be getting into arguments over it - as passionately as people feel there are no right and wrong answers in snake keeping just opinions which you're all welcome to share.
Personally I like BHB and SnakeBytes, I also however agree that the giant snake housing isn't adequate however I say that with my 2 years experience with snakes 0 years with giants, I won't be throwing my opinion in the face of experienced keepers like Brian.
As for the way the rest of their stock is kept I have no problem with it, they all keep to be kept fine from what I can tell.
The tagging on the show bores me to death it's incredibly well-used now boring but I wouldn't go so far as to say they antagonize the snakes they just deliberately film aggressive snakes which are quick to bite anyway.
As for the way RFUK has acted over it, as usual RFUK is being RFUK they love to argue which is fine but I think Brian deserved more respect than he was given with that thread, despite being semi "celebrity" status in the reptile world he has always made it incredibly easy to contact him and all these issues could and should have been discussed with him first before being posted over a huge forum. |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 12:51:34 I like snakes bytes but more to see the cool lookin snakes . However I do think the burms need more room as do most people I believe . I love seeing the American shows they go to aswell . I do think they push it gettin the snakes to bite , but we all have the rule no pi s or it didn't happen posts when we get bit and find the pics funny . I think at first or may have been intended on the show to let people see bites aren't so bad but its getting abit old on there now |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 08:37:48 most of the people on that thread have no problem with how he keeps 99% of his snakes what has got people upset myself included in this is the fact they keep a 16ft burm crammed into a tiny draw with hardly any room to move.
i have no problem with rack systems as they have their uses as long as said animal had enough room to move and thermoregulate.
as for winding up the snakes just to get tagged for the show that is not really fair on them to be honest |
