Posted - 20/12/2012 : 22:23:45 As westerners, we can really only complain about the way these creatures are handled. I know it seems cruel, but as I said in my other post, I have seen far worse being done in the name of food. |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 21:56:26 I read a piece in the latest Practical Reptile Keeping mag about the effect that taking animals from the wild has on the ecosystem there and it raised an interesting point about how although we normally assume it's a terrible thing the places where these animals are being taken from and normally rather poor places that do so to earn an income - without being able to do that the people would go hungry and eventually the places these animals live in would be torn down to make room for more farmland which is normally these peoples main income (which obviously would destroy a larger population of the animals than the pet trade claims) I realise that's not about skinning them but I imagine there is a lot of overlap where snakeskin is creating some economy that without might lead to deforestation. |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 21:49:11 The only way it'll end is if there is no longer a demand for the items which will never happen while there are people who are willing to buy them, I should have added to my last post, that although the video really disgusted me I am not against the use of reptile skins as long as they are killed humanely and in numbers that do not effect the balance of nature in which ever enviroment they are living. Unfortunately if that were to happen the cost of using them would go through the roof, so in short it will never end while one person is willing to pay another for a particular product. |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 21:19:58 True Mark, but surely the whole trade is fueled by the vanity of westerners, bit like the ivory trade and the hands of gorillas to decorate a desk..its just wrong. I can see no easy way to put an end to it :( |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 20:36:05 Janie, yes I know belts and shoes are a by product, and on the whole I am sure that cattle are killed as quickly as possible. But you have to remember, killing animals in a bad way is how they live. I have seen a lot worse done to animals that are then eaten alive. I have seen frogs skinned alive, and left to hop around skinless waiting to be eaten. Its not right by our standards, but its normal for many walks of life. |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 13:32:33 Dead of natural causes is acceptable, but I'm sure the ones listed on ebay are killed and skinned purely for profit, and that I can't accept.
The point was made abou leather shoes and belts, cattle are killed for meat and the hides used..they are not skinned alive. |

Posted - 20/12/2012 : 13:14:02 I think dead snakes are readily available tbh, there are people that keep cobras that buy royal pythons that have died of natural causes to feed to the cobras. i was shocked the first time i saw a cobra eating an albino royal |

Posted - 19/12/2012 : 23:22:57 I cant see the problem, I wear leather shoes and a leather belt. Plenty of women wear snakeskin/alligator skin shoes and have hand bags made of the same. |

Posted - 18/12/2012 : 23:07:00 Probably skinned alive too to preserve the skin. I've seen this in animal rights videos its awful, hung up and skinned, left to die. |

Posted - 18/12/2012 : 17:12:45 Aye due to the location ( which I didnt see at first) I would assume poaching |

Posted - 18/12/2012 : 17:09:19 But that comes back to the debate of them earning a living and being able to feed there family.
I wish there was a better way for them to feed themselves but needs must. Unless you have seen alot of the poverty in these types of country's it's hard to understand. |

Posted - 18/12/2012 : 16:59:18 Its ok to work on animals that have died naturally but I bet these were killed for there skin with it being in indonesia, I think quite a few animals get killed for skin and stuff in that parrt of the world |

Posted - 18/12/2012 : 16:46:07 I have no problems with taxidermy either. |
Kelfezond |
Posted - 18/12/2012 : 15:15:48 He's a taxidermist though that's his profession, he probably buys dead frozen snakes to work on.
I don't really mind it, think it's quite an interesting thing to be able to do, I've always said I'd be happy to have any of my snakes worked on by a taxidermist when they finally croak. |
