What does it mean to "prove out" a morph, or words to that affect?
Thanks! |

Posted - 19/12/2012 : 14:25:54 Yes as above it's when a snake is breed to see if what makes it different is passed on to the next generation.
As an example a snake is found in the wild with a strange pattern/colour, so a breeder buys it hoping that it could be a new morph and make them lots of money, down the line. BHB took a big gamble buying the first ever pinstripe for I think for about $25,000 hoping that the pattern was genetic and not a one off, so when it was old enough he bred it to a normal to try and "prove it out" which it did, as the babies or some of the babies took after the adult, and the pinstripe morph was born.
With something like the clown morph it's a little harder because the morph is recessive and all the babies would have been born "looking normal" so it wouldn't be proven as a genetic morph untill the second generation were born, by breeding the babies from the first pairing back to the visual "clown". Hope that makes sense.. |

Its slightly more complicated with dominant, co dominant genes etc and I'm sure someone like Kelfezond or Del (who breed Royals) will be able to give a much more complex answer or simply watch this video Kelfezond made a while back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8_gtPHtP2k |
