Posted - 16/01/2013 : 10:28:35 I'm begining to think that I should type up a booklet or something... 'Blue's random comments and questions'. What d'you think? ; )
OK, so I'm going to take a guess here and say that there's a few of you on here that like to work out, or at least like to excercise to some degree, right? OK, a bit about me, just so this all makes sense (hopfully). I have M.E. which is an auto-immune disorder with many side effects. Years ago, as an early teen, I used to like to excerise and do a bit of working out. And at the time I only did it 'cause I liked to. It felt good to do it. I used to walk (long distance), skip, lift weights, do pushups and situps. Even had rollerblades X ) Then I went into a serious relaps and it was only then that I was diagnosed with M.E. (after years of being put down by people). I was really ill for a while and as a result my body litrally ate it's own muscle. I lost a lot of weight. Afterwards, as I was getting better, I put on a lot of weight. I've since managed to loose most of that wieght. But I still feel uncomfortable and I'm not the way I used to be at all. I certainly don't have the strenth or the muscle that I used to. And I feel... flabby, for lack of a better word. Having M.E. means, amongst other things, that I'm left with bad joints, a weak back and 'cause of an old injury, just to top things off, I also have a weak left wrist that means I can't hold any weight in that hand.
A few months ago I bought a a speed rope. With the awful weather we've been having the last couple of years I thought it would be good for when I can't get outside to go on my usual walk around in the morning, and just a good thing to start off with for everyday. ...unfortunatly, I've found out that somewhere along the line, between being a kid and now, I seem to have lost the ability to jump : / Another side effect of M.E. is poor balance and co-ordination. Another reason I chose a rope, thinking I might be able to kill more birds with the one stone. So I'm not sure if that's why I'm so bad at it, or if I'm just not doing something right. Does anyone skip on here, and if so do you have any tips for me to get started? I've watched all the videos 'n' all that.
I'd idealy like to get back into some sort of excercise routine. I know that I'm never going to be able to do what I used to, and that these days there's a lot I can't do for the above reasons. Due to a breathing condition I also can't lie flat on my back or stomach... I stop breathing. Basically. If you were basing it on your own personal experiance of different exercises would there be any that would stick out to you that you think might help me? I'm after core excerices mainly, to strenthen everything and burn fat but also to tone up as well. I was starting the plank, and quite enjoying it as well. But unfortunatly, as carful as I tryed to be, my back couldn't take it : (
So, I'm after some ideas for low-impact, hi-burn excercises that might work for someone like me.
Any why can't I jump? X ) Am I doing something wrong or am I just bloody usless?
I thought this post might help to get others started in excercises as well, for the new year, so if there are some popular 'starter' excercises anyone would like to share then feel free : ) |

Posted - 01/02/2013 : 09:52:58 Yeah, I just wish I could work this speed rope out. Still can't seem to get the hang of jumping over a bit of plastic : /
Anyway, I'll keep looking around for something I like the look of. |

Posted - 31/01/2013 : 16:14:06 You know,if you do it right :) you can take like two days off a week. But like you say,it does rain alot here hehe.So having a backup thing to do indoors would help :) |

Posted - 31/01/2013 : 08:42:34 I haven't got the energy spare not too! : )
I still need a way to excercise in the house though, for when I can't get outside. I've read about how people convert their bike into an indoor excercise bike, but I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that : / Although knowing me I've probably got that wrong somewhere along the line. |

Sometimes I have to do that when I'm walking. So I'm guessing I might have to do it more with a bike, at least at first. |

Yeah :P all the places you can go,it's hardly just sitting on a bike hehe.

Posted - 29/01/2013 : 08:26:53 I live in County Durham. There's moors all around me, not just one, and woods. Allens Ford is a huge Nature reserve that is litrally just a street away from me. I have the Derwent Resivuar (can't spell that) just two hours walk away from my house that I like to try and get to in the Summer when I'm feeling good enough. I have another Res called Smiddy in the other diretion. I've got Hamsterly Forest that I found out would be a two hour bike ride and that's all through the moors to get there. So I'd love to try and get there some time if I could find a quieter area to be. Endless different places really. Can never get bored. And I'm always out somewhere, with my camera gear, whenever I can be : )

Posted - 28/01/2013 : 16:53:37 But you're going up hills, all around the moors doing different speeds etc,it all adds resistance :)
Where do you live?which moor? |

Posted - 28/01/2013 : 09:11:50 I've never thought about pilates. I can lie on my side ne bother, so I suppose I could look and see if there would be anything I could do that might help.
I do have a lot of hills around here, especialy through the moors, and steap banks. But where I am it doesn't matter where you want to be, whichever direction, you have to get up them first if you want to get back down! So there's no easy way out of that one ; )
I think I might have a bit of an old fasioned side to me that says that you have to be 'working' to be excersising. I know that knackering yourself is going to do very little (the body just ends up going into 'reserve' mode), but at the same time I still feel like I'm doing more good if I'm doing something more physical. Like walking or whatever. Saying that though, walking has only managed to get me so far. And it can still be too hard for me if I'm not well. So I think that's why I can't be totally conviced (yet) that sitting on a bike is better than other things. Maybe I'm a bit outdated in a way? : / |

And then there's these new machines that are suppose to get you fit by wobbling about and vibrating... : /
Yeah anything like that, which you can do infront of the tv,that moves your arm one cm,for 10 mins a day.Isn't going to make you lose 10 stone like they claim hehe.
quote: But to be honest I almost feel like it's cheating?
It would be,if you only went down hills hehe.

Posted - 27/01/2013 : 10:44:59 i know you said you cant lie on your back/stomach but Pilates may be worth a look as there's a lot of stuff you can do led on your side if that's possible?
i did start doing this a while back as read it can help with my IBS, really need to start doing it on a regular basis |

Posted - 27/01/2013 : 08:45:34 Nah, I don't beleive any of these TV or 'fad' excersise things. And lets face it, some of them are just plain silly.

Well, it seems the bike is the winner so far in votes. But to be honest I almost feel like it's cheating? I suppose I'm so used to walking everywhere, and the effort it takes, that the idea of sitting down while getting somewhere seems to be... less work. Lazy, even. I just can't see how it can be as effective as everyone claims. But their are plenty of people I come across along the bike tracks that ride their bike non stop, and most of them are as fit as butcher's Dogs. So their must be something in it. I do see that working to haul a heavy mountain bike around, in its-self, is going to need energy. So it must acheive something. But is it much better than walking?

Posted - 26/01/2013 : 18:20:19 that was my point,if you can do stuff with a bike go for that :) rather then stuff like that shake weight thing hahahaha.
quote: I really don't think abdominal excersises are much good at all for burning fat.
excersises that build muscle without you doing any form of fat burning is pointless. As it just builds the muscle under the fat hehe.
Don't go for one of these tv ad things,or to easy to be true things from argos etc. |
BlueDragon |
Posted - 25/01/2013 : 08:59:42 Yeah, I think that's best. I know that some people think the more knackered you are at the end then therefore the more you've burnt, but that's just not true. Fortunatly for me some of the best fat burners are the slower, easier excersises. Can't complain at that : )
I really don't think abdominal excersises are much good at all for burning fat. Seems you have to work yourself into a stuper just to get anywhere at all : / I could be wrong.
Unfortunatly going up and down stairs makes me dizzy. I have to hold on just to know which way up I am. Sounds strange, I know. I fall down them sometimes, so I have to be carful.
A bike will help with all sorts, not just as a way to excersise, so hopfully it'll get me out more and doing more and finding new little places. Walking is all I do (can't go on public transport even if I'd want to), so if I need to get somwhere I walk there. But it can be hard to do if where you want to be is far away. I'm not far from places like Gibside and Thornley Woods, but have never been able to get there on foot 'cause it's always just that bit too far. And there's also Beamish not far from me. Not sure I'll be able to handle Beamish or not (although I do love it there), but the other two should be nice and quiet for me. I'd really love to be able to go places like that. And of course once you get there you have to walk around (if you don't cheat, that is). Hopfully a bike will get me there and I'll be working along the way. Nowt better than excersise that you actually enjoy doing : )
...Not sure how I'll look on a bike though X ) |

Posted - 24/01/2013 : 21:18:04 Find something like bike riding etc,Something that burns more fat in a shorter space of time..So you have to do less of it.
Even running/walking up the stairs for 10 mins a day,Something that's cardio and not muscle building.Sure you know what i mean, tons of workouts like abdominal workouts claim to burn of all the fat to.But most people do a 10/15 cardio before hand,to burn of the fat.:) |

And I feel very alone constantly. Including the few friends I have and family. It's a struggle. |

Posted - 23/01/2013 : 08:58:17 I'm glad I could make you feel that way. I don't have any friends, so it can feel like I'm the only one battling this as well.
I was told I wasn't dyslexic in school and was told I was just making it up so I didn't have to work or do homework. It was only when I went into senior school that the teachers there twigged that I wasn't right, and that actually I'm pretty usless with numbers. I can't spell, I write letters the wrong way round, I miss letters out and mix them up... I make words up that look right to me till someone says they don't exist X )
And I almost always have to read things more than once to remember it all. Or to make it make sense.
Your not the only one out there, it can just feel that way sometimes : ) |

Posted - 22/01/2013 : 12:05:31 Dont worry about it being long reply. this will sound so crazy too bit im also dyslexic. Only found out in college. Short term memory not quite goid enough to read things n take in straight away. So ive rear that post a few times lol my illness then makes my memory hell of a lot worse which dont help.
You no the best part of talking to you is the fact that someone else understands makes me feel so less alone with everything. Which is one thing I can't get my head around. My friends family even strangers look at me and think I'm putting it on etc. but I push my self and find I'm in bed the next day coz of it. Even to the point of feeling like jelly. I feel that probably 90% of time.
Hey your not ancient :-) |
