Hey all. I just installed a new 150w heat lamp and holder in my 4x2x2 viv and the outside top of viv seems to be getting very hot. Anyone else have this issue? Is this normal?

Yep, I run a 150w ceramic and the to of my viv gets warm, it is chucking out a fair amount of heat after all. It's a good spot for warming a rub up a little bit for when I do a viv clean!!

Makes an ideal place to defrost, and warm up, a container of rodents.

I put a washing up bowl of cold water ontop to cool it for a few hours while it reached temp and once it settled all was good!

I wouldnt put a crestie on top of a heat source. They have a very low tolerance to heat and if they get too hot it kills them, quickly.

I have my 6x2x2 on a 150 watt ceramic bulb and its plenty powerful enough. I'm guessing different bulb brands and designs perform differently even when they are the same wattage. I use this one (http://www.livefoodsbypost.co.uk/komodo-radiant-heat-lamp-150w-4882-p.asp) I'm wondering if it is a more efficient design, I use 100 watt versions in my 3x2x2 and they are almost too efficient and I had to increase hot side ventilation in my viv stack design (yep I'm a nerd and did mock up heating tests to get the vivstack to run to an exact specification).

I found a 150watt ceramic had to work to hard to keep temp in 4ft x2ftx2ft viv, and as you said top of viv was very hot all the time, changed to a 250watt ceramic and moved it, a bit further of the back wall and it was much better, dont know if its the same as a bulb

I was guessing it was because its warming up because my other viv is warm ontop but not HOT like this one! I might move my cresty ontop of it, get rid of his heat mat then and save some electricity ;)

Heat rises, it will get warm. Great little warming spot for rats, a heat source for bugs or frogs too. As its about 30°C.

Newly installed it will be running at full whack so will be warmer than normal, once everything gets up to temperature the bulb will turn down and the top will cool slightly too.
