Hi guys,

I am getting my first Royal Python next week and have been telling a few people about it as I am very excited.

I'm pretty sure that everyone has had the same reaction as I got?!

"Your getting a snake!!" Oh my god...

Most reactions have been this and some to the degree of "if you get a snake then I will NOT be coming round" a couple have said they would come and see him but wouldn't touch which I think is fine.

It really annoys me as I have been researching them for a while now and the feeling I get is that they are docile creatures who hide away most of the time.

My question is this...

Is there anywhere (website) that can help to change these narrow minded idiots or anything that I can say or do to explain to them how amazing they are??

Any help?

Please feel free to add your own experiences or stories as well!

Thanks,

Bram

Had the classic last night... Snakes (generalising) are ugly, slimy and will bite you! I called her a narrow minded fool and sent her a link to the care sheet, told her to read it and then we may talk again!!

i do a lot of fundraiser's for the local reptile rescue where we take a selection of reptile's to various's big show's, school's, school fete's, kid's party's ect which really help's some of the uneducated and with the kid's having the chance to get up close an hold the reptile's they wont grow up with the fear/misconception's about them that a lot of adult's have.
one of the best thing's about the fundraiser's is when someone come's along who is genuinely scared manage's to get over their fear starting with holding a little royal an after a while they will be happy as larry with one of the burm's around their neck.

my friend's have no interest in the reptile's but are not really bothered by them to be honest, a couple of family member's occasionally make a snide comment about having ebough of them when i get a new one but i don't care basically they can get stuffed reptile's are my passion an wont be going anywhere

To be honset I think the next generation will be a lot more accepting of snakes. Its no secret that herps have taken off in a big way recently. Ive seen more and more shops opening over the years, and business seems to be booming. Then when you go to a shop theres always kids in holding snakes, and they are completely fearless.
Also people I know who have kids and snakes, the kids are great with all the snakes. I reckon as this generation grows older, snakes will become more acceptable.

Went and saw the wife's side of the family and they seem pretty cool with the idea, although sceptical at first. Result!

I had a long hair chihuahua, he didn't yap but he was a grumpy little beggar and very particular who he'd go to if he was that way out. Lived to be 16. I have a x breed (Pomeranian x jack Russell x cavalier) bloody pest. She's gorgeous but he'll does she yap. I've had dogs 40 years and never had a dog like her

Since getting into reptiles I've been a lot less judgmental about animals than I was before, there were a few stereotypes I bought into that I now don't, pitbull's being super dangerous, chihuahuas being annoying yappy things, rodents being dirty animals, goldfish growing based on their housing size. I believed all that before I started to learn about animals.

Please show me a chihuahua that is not yapping and annoying Sharon's family all have them, they drive me mad barking at everything they look at my snakes always hiss through there vivs when they come to visit :)

Lol they're my guilty pleasure! My sister got one called Prince a while back and I loved the little guy!

Well there's definitely one more of us and one less of them now!!

I'm a pretty fast learner so will try and share my newly learned knowledge with anyone willing enough to listen!

Everyone's an expert, they've all see an animal planet documentary or something on national geographic so don't waste your time on the dim witted

Instead, find more snake folk to talk about snakes and geek out with. While always being gracious enough to help educate those who show an interest or open mind

It's a "them and us" kinda world out there but, everyday there's one more of "us" and one less of "them"

I got asked by a woman I work with if I have to keep anti-venom in the house in case one bites me! Most of the others shudder and say 'yuk, slimey things!' Even the blokes! Someone asked if the snakes could eat one of my cats. It's an uneducated world out there1

I've got a toy poodle, huge misconceptions about them. He's chilled, doesn't yap, isn't needy, isn't highly strung and isn't clipped like a poodle, he's just curly. I often get asked what breed he is

Good for you two!

I'm not keen on the big spiders, but I don't know much about them so I don't really judge. I've never had the opportunity to handle one but will do when the opportunity arises.

I think rockroyal was bang on and u am actually somewhat pleasantly surprised at the response!

Maybe you should take one in for show and tell?!

I'm pretty sure that if kids were properly educated about reptiles it would be very beneficial as in my experience all kids love and are fascinated about them!

Funny enough someone once said to me that my dog was stupid. I pointed out I thought their child was ugly. When they got a bit asset I told em not to insult my baby if I wasn't allowed to insult theirs.

I have a phobia of spiders, can't even look at tarantula pictures and wouldn't be able to be near one that wasn't behind glass but I wouldn't refuse to visit someone just cos they had one as a pet. I'd just ask em not to get it out the tank. Always had a thing bout spiders.

I was picking my boy up from school today and one of the mothers said to me you keep snakes don't you, I said yes I do her reply was, horrid things that are cold feel like slime and will bite you. I said to her that's no way to talk about her husband, she gave me a very nasty look I said to her well I don't know you're husband so I'll just day something horrid about him just like you just did about snakes. she paused for thought and said you're right I should not judge what I no nothing about.

There is way to much media scare mongering with snakes, I just try and educate the ones that are willing to listen and learn.

Best pets ever (don't let my dog hear that)
Kelfezond Posted - 12/07/2013 : 14:12:59
Most snake owners (bar a few of the annoying "Look how cool I am" owners do everything in their power to portray snakes in a good light. :)
RoyalBram Posted - 12/07/2013 : 13:46:39
I'm surprised there isn't more celebrities with snakes that campaign for them.

TBH you don't really hear much either way so if there were more people out there telling and showing people how amazing they are then maybe opinions would change?!

In the meantime I will take the flak and enjoy the little man!!

They always refer back to one incident in 1994. (Random date) lol No recent facts or anything.
