It don't take any brains to look after them and the fact that they smell so much I think is the reason why hardly anyone keeps the Trash snake |

Posted - 14/12/2013 : 21:47:58 garters snakes are great snakes to keep they will only stink if they are keep in one of those sterile supposedly hygienic plastic tubs if they are kept in a large natural enclosure with a bioactive substrate they don't smell at all. because most species are small they are perfect for naturalistic vivs and many species are semi aquatic (which is also cool). they are voracious fish feeders (mine have never refused a meal ). so in short terms garters are awesome ! |

Most breeders in the US convert garter snakes to mice diet as soon as possible starting with pinky parts. Garter snakes can live their whole lives on a mouse-only diet and be healthy. Some people like to give worms and fish as treats but this is not necessary. I have not heard any reports of them having too much calcium. But, if the gartner snake is not on mice, they have to have a varied diet so that they won't become calcium and B1 deficient. Some stores sell commercial garter snake sausages which is part of the reason why some kids choose garter snakes for pets because they can be disconnected from the prey-model. But these sausages cause stinky poop and, of course, it is difficult to convert garter snakes to sausages.

Posted - 11/12/2013 : 17:48:40 We have eastern garter snakes here. They don't smell so much if they feel safe and secure and they are fed on a mice diet.
The really awful smell of the garter snake is when it musks. The ones my kids like to catch from the backyard would musk and thrash before it would bite.
Their poop stink bad when they're feeding on worms or fish or frogs. It stinks a lot less if they're feeding on mice.
They're not as bitey as racers. They're probably even the least bitey of the wild snakes around my house. But, that stinky musk that they do instead of biting can be really difficult to wash off that sometimes you wish they would bite instead!
I think they're very pretty snakes. But, they're common here so we'd rather have something you can't just find in your backyard to have as a pet, ya know?
