As more exotics arrive at my house the elec bill increases too. It's not to bad but with seven heat & UV bulbs running & two ceramics for my Pythons its starting to increase. With more snakes planned for this year its going to get more expensive to run. I don't mind the running costs as atm its affordable, but can't help thinking that there must be a cheaper way of running everything.
Have any of you guys/girls looked into solar, wind power or even water to run things? What are the options? & does the installation cost outweigh the saving on a monthly elec bill? Would it take years to see any savings on the initial outlay or are these things more economical now days?

I was also thinking about solar, but don't know what would be the best option.Storing the elec produced for my own use or selling back to the supplier to reduce my overall cost.
I'm not ready to do this yet due to a divorce situation. All being well i'll be keeping the house & intend on knocking through into a cottage we have attached to the house, this will then be the designated "hobby" room & will require some juice to run all the stuff I would like to put in it :)

I'd been considering solar panels as away to offset the cost of heating the rep room ( we run a 1.5kw oil filled heater to keep the room at a constant temp as well as the mats/bulbs/AHS/rep rad)

From what I understand, it takes a while to start to see any money back from solar panels, once you take initial outlay into account. I don't plan on staying in this house forever, so I'm holding off for now

We're in credit still with the energy company so no real need to change anything just yet for us
