Hi got a new royal today it's m first i have a corn aswell, Just wondering I have a 7.5 watt heat mat on royal tank (small starter tank) it came with a thermostat however i have never had one on my corn snakes tank same tank but the corn has a 6.5 watt heat mat. Do i need a thermostat on my royal tank or will he be fine without one?

if the mat is controlled by a stat you should be ok...

have you got substrate on top of the mat?

if so how much?

Personally I'd have the probe under the mat so that there's no gap between the mat and the tank.

dial thermometers are pants, digital thermometers are more accurate, and sorry thermostats are a must on all heat sources, despite what the temp may be now, tomorrow or the next day, there's nothing stopping the heat mat from malfunctioning.
having a gap between the tank and mat makes zero difference.

Yes a dial one.it's the small mini stat. I have taped the mat to the bottom of the outside of the tank with the prob betweenthe mat an the tank. I am a little concered incase this may cause hot spots. On my corn tank the mat has a gap between tank an mat am just wondering if this is why it dosen't have a stat :)

are you using a dial thermometer?
Breadie_one Posted - 06/07/2009 : 20:12:17
The thing is The temp is too low just now it's sitting at 80oC in hot end.

I agree with Lee.
