Also, heavily bodied snakes (such as Royals) can cause thermal blocking on heat mats making them overheat regardless of whether on a stat. I think that under RUBs this shouldn't be the case, only when the snake can come into direct contact with them.

ok well im a heat mat man myself well aint got no choice in it as i have only a rack and all my royals seem fine all eating and shedding well so happy days

Cheers Danny

As long as the heatmats are on thermostats the snakes shouldn't burn themselves. The reason heatmats aren't recommended for adult pythons and boas is that they need a warm ambient temperature because they're heavily built. All a heatmat does is provide a warm spot on the floor and it's not enough for them.

Whats everyones view on keeping adult royals on heat mats??? mine are and they seem ok but some people say royals are to heavy for mats and they can burn them selfs how true is that??

Cheers Danny

Princess has an infra-red bulb on a dimmer at 32*c. I used to drop the temp at night by 5*c, but since no-one else seemed to I stopped.

Feather has a mat under her faun on a Lucky Reptile Thermo Control Pro which is set to 32*c, but usually holds at about 28*c. After reading Danny's suggestion of the foil tape I'm going to stick some under the mat to see if that improves it, but she does seem to prefer the cool end anyway. She'll be getting either an infra-red or a ceramic when she's big enough for a viv.

I use RUB's with mats set to 32-33*C and Ceramics with viv's set to 32*C...
Danny Action1 Posted - 22/07/2009 : 21:07:34
Oh lot of people with ceramics and infra red lamps.

Also with my heat mats and that i use foil tape underneath to reflect the heat back up if you now what i mean and i have no problems with my tepature at all even with heating my 50L rubs wich is thicker plastic

Cheers Danny

have you tried putting something in between the probe and the mat...just to make the mat get hotter before the probe cuts out the stat...just a thought...

and two royals in rubs on heat mats, but the temps fluctuate between 29-30 i struggle to get them to 31 these are both run on mat stats

No Night time drops

where do you keep your probes Anne. I found i couldnt get my temps above 30*C when i had the probe on the mat, even with the stat turned up full. Moved the probe to inside the RUB and it reached temp required.
Its because the mat may have to reach 35+*C to create the correct temp inside the RUB...

My probes are stuck to the bottom of the rubs ( outside...)

the rubs are inside a viv...but i am only talking a 9L and a 5L

my top temp on the mats is 30.4, it is currently reading 30.5..lol..i do struggle with the bigger rub, but invariably it sits at around 29-29.5

i have been told to put the heat mats on a pulse as this helps to cure some of the problems..

i really really struggled to get temps up in an 18L rub...

but i think it reaches this temp cos the viv below has a dimmer stat running an infrared sop there is a little heat transfer but not much...and it is in the lounge which gets warm anyway..

if the dimmer drops the temps drop on the digital thermometers..

the thermometers are underneath the warm end hides

it detects light, its a little eye on the thermostat, when the light levels are up, it assumes day time temp, when it's dark, it assumes a night time temp. pretty handy if you have something that requires a night time difference, bearded dragons for example

heat mat stat n therm..waivers between 28-33 degrees c, cool end roughly 22-24 degrees

25-30C, any higher and my lot spend 99.999999% of their time in water cooling down.
Sabine prefers the lower end of the temp scale, and loves a cool end circa 23C
Stig is happy with a hot end no more than 29C and cool end around 25
Boo is a pain in the arse and I haven't worked her out yet. She is currently on the default 32C hot end on a mat
