Next week we're going away for a few days, and one of our friends is going to feed and water the cats. I asked her if she'd mind changing the snakes' water too, and one of the guys overheard and was asking what kind they were. As soon as I mentioned the boa he said that he knew a lass with one, and she let it sleep in her bed. One day she took it to the vets 'cause it was off its food... you know the rest.

He was insistent that he not only knew the girl in question, but that it had been in the paper.

What is the myth??

The story goes like this:

There's this girl I know that had a boa constrictor and she used to let it sleep in her bed. It had been off its food for a few weeks so she took it to the vet. When she mentioned that the snake slept in her bed the vet asked if it curled up with her. No, she replies, that's the odd thing, he lies straight alongside me. The vet tells her that the snake has to be put down. He says that it's been starving itself in preparation for a large meal. How do you know? The girl asks. The vet replies that when the snake was lying next to her her it wasn't being affectionate, it was measuring her to eat!

The snake in question can be any largish constrictor, and the story is obviously complete pigswill; however it's always related as being gospel truth and the teller usually swears that they either know the girl in question, or that she's a friend of a friend.
