I've had confirmation today that my application has been successful and that I am now a member of the Silloth Lifeboat crew! So if any of you ever feel like chucking yourselves into the sea, I can come along and pull you out again.

I'm sure that you will have great fun and no doubt see triumphs as well as tragedies. It is a worthy cause and I have a great respect for lifeboat crew. Not only that but just imagine your street (or beach) cred going up when you are cruising along the seafront!! Congratulations.

Is it one of those 'Sub'tractors!?! They are cool looking things!

It's all very exciting.

It's one of these:

Driving the tractor is quite easy, it's when you're pushing a trailer with an 8 metre boat on it that it gets interesting.

What's the process from now, do you have to go through weeks of rigorous training?

Fortunately I don't get sea sick, so no problems there.

Yes, there's lots of training to come. Most of it is on Sunday mornings when the boat goes out on exercise, but I will also have a week of intensive training at the Lifeboat College in Poole. I'm also learning to drive the tractor that launches the boat, as launch / recovery drivers are in short supply, and that has its own week-long course in addition to the training at the station. There's a lot to take in, and it'll probably be a while before I'm going out on rescues.

Thanks guys, it's something I've been interested in for a while but a few weeks back they took me for a run out on the boat and I applied there and then. 40mph isn't fast on the road, but on rough water it's going it some!
