Definitely don't panic and don't feel like you're some sort of alien either. I've struggled with depression all my life and my brother is Bipolar type 2, which was only diagnosed just over a year ago. It's not something that 'goes away', but it's something that can be managed with the correct medication, support and the understanding of those around you (family, friends, employer etc). Your GP may refer you to a specialist to have a chat and they'll take it from there. The key is to try and be as open and honest with Drs as possible, so they can help you and get things right. There are lots of different sorts of medication that can be prescribed for Bipolar... it also depends greatly on which type the person has. Lithium is still used a lot (with good success), but there are other drugs prescribed as well. Some of which include things like amitriptyline, paroxetine and lamotrigine. Don't scare yourself too much though by over-Googling these meds, just take things a step at a time and get a professional opinion.
There is a lot of support for people with Bipolar and there isn't nearly as much stigma about the condition that there used to be. Hope your appointment tomorrow goes well.

good luck but with a definate diagnosis you will be ok, my best friend from childhood is bipolar and when she got put on meds (i dont know which ones) she felt a lot more in control and can deal with it better - her doctor got it wrong so many times so she was very relieved when she got the right diagnosis

Good luck, You aren't the only one out there, there's a huge amount of support for you, make sure you take advantage of it cause it helps.

spor Posted - 28/10/2009 : 23:39:59
Hi Katey. don't panic wait until you go to the doctors and see what they say. And even then still don't panic my wife and I know several people who are bipolar and they manage their condition with medication. they have always said that the best thing for them was actually being diagnosed as they had been on and of the wrong medication and been treated for the wrong condition.
