thanks to all who gave me advise about the mite problem bella had.i used the olive oil method and as far as i can tell they have all gone! im a bit of a hippy and like to use natural / alternative methods where possible so im chuffed to bits!  |

A bit busy sorting out a new addition to the zoo at the moment but, hopefully, that will be sorted tomorrow. I'll try and have a look through my entomology textbooks at the weekend to swot up a bit on the acari (mites). Info about Blowflies and post-mortem intervals of corpses I can tell you off the top of my head but the acari are a very specialist area which is emerging in forensics. Should be able to find a general timeframe for their lifecycle, etc.
DNA from a mite on its own won't do anything apart from degrade. Whether the bleach will work on the eggs or not depends on how permiable they are. It will kill the mites that have already hatched though. |

I would just bath the snake in veg oil and water to treat the snake whilst you treat the viv using Ardap.
Ardap lasts for up to 6 weeks, not sure if it gets rid of the eggs or not, but any mites that do hatch wont last long. |

well im no expert but i would think:
If the method you have used (olive oil baths) has worked to get rid of the mites, then thats a perfectly capable technique, other possible techniques include frontline and various sprays ect.
What you need to concentrate on is ensuring that the mites dont come back, by using ardap/bleach to break down any mite DNA left in your viv, and bathing bella every few days or so in olive oil to kill any eggs on her at the moment that may hatch.
I'm sure someone will give you better advice, im no expert at this, just my opinion! |

oh ok, sorry i havent looked up the ardap yet, i didnt know it was just for treating the viv. what would you suggest for treating bella? |

i think what Paul means is that ardap would be better than bleach at cleaning the viv and ensuring that a mite popuation wont regenerate.
Dont use ardap on your snake...
paul what sort of timeframe would yousuggest before putting the snake back in the viv? and after how many treatments? |

excellent, thanks guys. i think i'll do another oil treatment and bleach the viv again this weekend to be sure and if she gets them again i will use the ardap. thank you!!!  |

Bleach works by degrading (breaking down) the DNA that it comes in contact with so it should do the job of killing the eggs in the viv. Ardap, or a similar treatment, would work quicker though as it is designed specifically for purpose. |

this is a guess too, but id be inclined to keep bleaching the viv once a week for 4 weeks, while keeping your snake in a 'definetly not mite infected' RUB. - while bathing him in olive oil once a week or so aswell.
Just to make sure any eggs that may hatch dont survive or any mites left in the viv do definetly perish.

ok, well i did leave all the contents of the viv in a very hot bleach solution for two hours and then i wiped the entire viv inside and out with the same bleach solution. do you think that would kill the eggs or will i still need something a bit stronger? |

That will kill the mites by suffocation, you just have to worry about the eggs that may hatch out in the next 6 weeks, making you have to start again. |
