for any one interested
to night i worked out how much electricity was being used by my vivs to work out cost.

I am running 5 IR 75watt heat lamps and monthly that is costing around £40. so £480 a year. and if we know that royals can live up to 40years that would be a total electricity cost of £19,200.

now if i were to switch out to heat mats.
to run 5 x20watt heat mats, they would cost around £14 a month so £168 per year and on the 40year span £6,720.
so that would make a saving of £12,480

so thinking about making the switch to heat mats. royals a keep very successfully in wrack systems with mats or using heat cable, so can't see a strong enough reason to stay with the heat lamps.

any thoughts or advice welcome.

well this is the dilima i am having. yes a heat lamp is better with large full bodied snakes, as it allow them to gain heat better also there is not the weight of a large snake sitting on a heat mat. but i guess we are more aware of such issues now and know not to along snakes direct contact with heat mats etc. most large breeders would be using racking systems with mats or heat cable rather the vivs with heat lamps. so these would be snakes over 1600g. and it clearly works for them.

i thought that royals did better with heat lamps instead of mats

Im on Komodo Heat mats, but also 100w ceramic heaters.
But if your on about cost cutting, mine in a stack use less the higher they are. The top one, which is polycarb encased uses next to nothing.
I started to look at costs and it does run away with you so i used LED lights. Only been a few days but so far so good.
The heat from the bottom 2 is enough to get it up to 24' and the 100w heater picks it up from there.

I'd personally go to mats, the costs aren't too dissimilar for the initial outlay but like you say the saving is there.
