Posted - 07/03/2011 : 21:29:07 Hi, I'm 16 and always wanted a snake. Definitely a royal, i know corns are good first snakes but i'm not so keen on their tiny heads and i absolutely love the shape of a pythons head :) thats just me being weird i suppose lol. anyway, i'm having a hard time convincing mum, dad is ready to go to the bank and get the cash now, he can sit with me and look at snakes for hours however, mum, not so keen. she says that she wouldn't mind the snake that much really and she's not scared of them but the only thing she won't let me do is put mice in her freezer or worse rats. she hates mice and hates rats even more and she says that the whole thought of having a dead animal next to a frozen pizza would make her sick. i agreed to pay for the food and everything else, including any possible vet bills (my mum is a big fan of 'what if's' hence after 9 years of me riding she barely agreed to a horse) anyway, she said i can have a snake if i buy my own kitchen as she's not gonna let me put dead animals on the counter or in a dish to warm it up or the freezer to store it. well, i'm only 16 so i dont think i can afford a kitchen, any ideas how to convince mum that it really isn't that bad? Btw, i love this forum :D Thanks everyone! x |

Posted - 09/03/2011 : 19:41:53 The best one I heard recently is 'wow I bet you stop the car and pick up all the road kill for the snake'. I just had to chuckle and say 'good idea'. |

Posted - 09/03/2011 : 19:34:35 I admit it does get bloody annoying having to do that polite laugh whenever they say something like that :p i just stop telling people i have snakes as it gets annoying explaining stuff like that |

Posted - 09/03/2011 : 19:00:32 Scampi isn't for human consumption anyway. <barf>.
I only have a months supply in at any time, 4-5 mice for the corn and same in rats for the royal. Keeps it fresh and still svaes me a bit of room in the freezer for my food.
The amount of people at work who find out I have snakes (its not hard to find out, I talk about them all day to anyone staying still enough to listen) they all say careful it doesn't eat you in your sleep, and what would you do if it wrapped round your neck, I have to explain that I'm not a rodent and as far as a snake is concerned I truely stink all that soap and deodourant and after shave, not appetising like a rat smells and if they were to wrap round my neck I'd just unravel them or probably just let them carry on with their wander as constriction is not the same as strangulation. I don't even attempt to explain I have a royal not a retic as its over their heads. lol.
They have such a bad rep, totally unjustified. |

Very true. I tend to think in terms of bulk with having 8 snakes, and it's true it works out much cheaper.
But it's put me off scampi big time ... breaded pinkies ...eww! |

LOL - when I told someone else that I'd got corn hatchlings I got the tale of the snake playing dead in order to size me up ...
What is it with snakes eh? If someone doesn't know what they're doing with many animals, horses and dogs, cattle and pigs and even sheep, for instance, they can come to grief (through their own fault I might add) whereas poor old snakey's much more likely to flee for its life ... a case of 'it's far more scared of the human than the human is of the snake' ...
Why have snakes got such a bad rep? (Pun intended) |

Posted - 09/03/2011 : 14:56:31 As for the mice in the freezer buy a box with an air tight lid the ones you clip down. Thats what i did and the wife is fine with it and after a few weeks your mum wont even notice they are their and if you buy say 10 mice/rats at a time it wont take up much room |

Posted - 07/03/2011 : 22:33:03 LOL - how did I miss this thread?
(Was watching creepy movie - 10 Rillington Place - on youtube, that's why.)
LOVE the fable of little Timmy! LMAO!
Aw, do hope you get your snake - I waited nearly 55 years due to parents and then husband...
Yeah, he thought corn hatchlings would scoff me - I'm only 7 and a half stone but that's ridiculous!
We all (me, snakes and cats) live together in harmony. A separate small freezer (£100 from Argos but you could look in charity shops, they sometimes have them) could be a good idea - you could keep your personal supply of Haagen-Dazs or whatever in there too. Defrost ratty in your bedroom and warm it up in hot water from the bathroom?
Good luck! |

Posted - 07/03/2011 : 22:13:09 yeah, i'd be scared incase the neighbours cat decided to come along as well so i wouldn't put it on the ground but i just wondered if a bit of fresh air every now and then would do any harm :) |

Posted - 07/03/2011 : 22:08:49 alright then that problem is solved then, i have a friend who owns a corn and she used to have a royal and she did say that she wouldn't mind looking after it if im away. i just wondered, in summer when its nice and warm, do you ever or can you take your snake outside? |

Posted - 07/03/2011 : 22:04:16 They aren't fussed and handled when they are away but youdo need to leave them to settle back home again but the same can apply if you change what room they are in or even which way they are facing sometimes. |

Posted - 07/03/2011 : 21:57:52 the better half is a veggie and it was strange for her to have mice and rats in the frezzer. she is getting used to it but as long as none of her food is in the same drawer. its just a case of getting your head arond it if your not used to it |
