so, i'm still working on my mum :D but, i started looking at different snakes and to be honest i'm very attracted to boa's and unusual snakes. however, i've never had a snake so i'm guessing buying a boa for my first snake isn't the best idea? am i right? so i decided to look for ones which i like the colour of :) typical me ;p here are two snakes which i absolutely love and can't decide on which one i like better... and which one would be better as a first snake... my guess the first one.

As BATS says, if its a baby then get him/her on rats asap. My Royal wont take rats as the previous owner had her on mice for over 2 years so wont touch rats except once the day after her shed in october saying that though shes only had 2 mice since then so she might take one when she decides its feeding time again |

Rats are best for royals. I'm guilty of saying 'mouse freezer' I know, but that's because I have a freezer full of mice lollies for the corns, and also for 2 royals who are hooked on mice ...
This mightn't seem to matter but when your royal is big, if you've let it stay on mice, you'll be paying out for several mice per feed instead of one rat. (Luckily I have a source of good cheap mice but rats are more nourishing and I've gotta get my mouse junkies weaned on to rats this spring!! )
Any decent shop will sell you one rodent. |

i do know that but my parents dont :D and it sounds perfect cuz i'm awful at saying goodbye anyway :) GTP's sound as if they're just a snake to look at and it costs you money so tbh i might buy a picture of a GTP same effect but cheaper lol :) still getting a royal thou :D i've only had experience with a corn before and a burmese python which was mahoosive! that was in a zoo lol, you were allowed to go and hold it but i only got to hold its tail as i was 7 and barely lifted the tail up anyway lol ;p i wouldn't call that much of an experience with the burmese, i have fed and held an adult corn thou, she's my friends girl called petra, she's really sweet and always buries her head in your hair then just stays there. but handling her made me realise that i prefer bigger snakes with big heads :D so i thought royal would be perfect as it seems like they're as sweet as corns but more of the type of snake i prefer in looks and size. i'll get a normal i think. now i just gotta either find a freezer or pop into my local pet shop and check if i can buy one mouse so then i'd just have to go to the shop on firday after school and buy a mouse, problem with freezer solved! then mum should be ok with it. hopefully... |

First things first, do you realise your Royal can still be around when your 46? Its a big commitment.
But saying that, only go for the Royal, GTP's are only for people with years of experience imo. Royals grow to a more manageable size and are very docile mostly. Getting bitten off a Royal is more preferable to getting bitten of a big python/boa lol Just make sure you know everything you need to know before buying and you'll be fine. Then again ive got quite a few "help me" posts on here lol |

I agree with above, starting out with corns or royals is the way forward. I have just got my first Boa and they are a different kettle of fish! Easy to look after but big strong beasties so a bit of experience is needed.

Hi, have you come across Reptile forums UK - known as the darkside or simply RFUK (LOL) - they have a good classified section, but be prepared for the vendors simply not to get back to you, they seem to be bit notorious for that. |

If you're interested in a normal royal I'm selling a female who is about 600ish grams, would depend where you live though of course. I've also got a spare viv for sale :P |

yeah, dad's wallet won't suffer as much :) i've already caught the bug before i even got the first one :D but i think i'll do that. get a normal or possibly a pastel and then get to know it and maybe after 1-2years breed my own or get another one :) i just like to go over the top with everything and i need a reminder not to :D thanks :) |

i would start off with a normal and then if you get bitten by the bug research breeding then breed your our morphs. much more satisfying than just buying a morph. not that i have breed yet |

Depends on which Boa you get. I've just put my order in for a Hogg Island Boa, they are smaller (but by no means small) than the common Boa but they are bigger than Royals, corn snakes etc. I wouldn't think they are a good starter snake because of their growth but nothing can beat the corn snake for a starter (I'm going to be shot for saying that here )
I have just started creating a GTP setup, its VERY complex and specialised and then there is the added catch, GTP's are not a great handling snake you can't handle them at all really as babies and as adults if they bite you, you'll REALLY know about it, they are notoriously aggresive.
I also wouldn't spend £1000+ on my first snake either, in fact it would be unlikely I'll ever spend £1000 on a snake. |

LOL - if you can afford a caramel albino you can definitely afford a separate mouse freezer!
Yes, the royal would be a much better choice for a first snake. I'm no expert on GTPs but even I know that they are fragile, fussy in their requirements, and temperamental - definitely a display snake for an expert.
I've only ever kept corns and royals so I'm not the person to advise you, but I believe there are quite a few unusual snakes out there that are calm and comparatively easy to keep but yet something that bit different? One of the smaller and calmer pythons or boas for instance? Other people on here will know.
