Not my technique I still feed Duke in a dish in the dark only his new hide has given him the perfect opportunity to spoil my fun. I like to watch them eat as I'm sure most do on here at least. Duke normally puts on quite the show of standing up to swallow and thats just great. Tonight, rat in the tin and lights off as usual, I'm keeping an eye on the rat waiting for Duke to start eating so I can have a watch. I spot movement out of the corner of my eye, I turn to check and see the rats tail disappearing into his hide. I could just see the rat tail disappear into a nose shape so he has eaten it but how rude!
In all seriousness I couldn't care less so long as he eats it, its bringing back substrate ingestion worries but not a lot I can do if its the only way he will eat. So thats 3 snakes all fed within 2 hours, its good that defrost time dictates a small gap between each one for me to prepare dishes, feeding tubs etc. Anyway happy days 3 for 3 is a score i like. |

Yeah, it's a good idea that, Boze, I put a dog feeding mat under Saada's hide and let her settle while the rat's defrosting (as long as I don't forget, which I do sometimes ... )
Love the story about the cat and maltesers, Strawb - it reminded me of a cat I had who used to bite the end off my sausage roll as I was putting it into my mouth, and the time that the lettuce eating Siamese raided my sunday lunch. Not the roast lamb, oh no. Madam grabbed a great hunk of cauliflower and strode off with it, growling and dripping mint sauce everywhere...
Whyever do some people think that keeping snakes and other animals is nerdy and sad? Life is never dull with these guys. |

My sal is the same these days, what I do a few hours before feeding is to take her out of her warm hide, lift the hide up and put a piece of newspaper down that covers the floor under her hide and the area outside her hide. Means when she drags it in shes still on the paper :-)

I caught Tia hiding in the cool end last night, which I've never seen her do. What they get up to when we're all in bed is anybody's guess.
On the subject of cats. My parents had a cat that used to take Maltesers out of my Dad's mouth as my Dad was just putting it in there. Another cat they had like kebab with chilli sauce. |

I like all animals but I'm not overly fond of cats. My dog wil eat anything infront of him but he has a wheat allergy so I have to be careful.
I just saw Duke!!! There is a rare treat, middle of the day and I spot movement, straight away I looked at the corn viv and nothing only then did I spot Duke extending out of his hide to the water bowl having a good sized drink. I look forward to cleaning that one up. I have a feeling that unless I take him out of his hide he'll never be leaving it as he can reach everything he needs. |

Right, suddenly there was no cat, but a Lotabob!
There you are, any of you guys trying to diet ... just have a cat living with you and let it share your meals. Trouble is, this may not work out very healthily ... as Finn said to me one day: 'Let's share. I'll have the chicken and you can have the chips ...'
I also once knew a Siamese who was obsessed with spring onions. And one of my Siamese was death to the veggie garden - she used to sit in the lettuce patch and chomp her way through like a large seal-pointed slug ...

I had a cat (well my gf did) and it was always just running at me and stealing my dinner, it used to just flick what it wanted on the foor with his stupid claws and leg it with it. I don't think I ever got to finish dinner without something getting pinched. I used to put it out the room so I could eat. Then it died and I put on a stone lol. |

I thought I'd educated Shahi to feeding in a rub but now he's made it clear that he likes to be up on his climbing branch and have the rat offered with tongs ... Duke fond of climbing? Otherwise maybe a permanent doggy feeding mat beneath his hide so that the substrate can't get in on the act?
They all have their quirks ... sorry, off topic here but still on subject of feeding. Fancied breakfast today, sitting on the back doorstep with plate of buttered toast and jam ... Mouse (one of my cats lol) strolled past and eyed the plate...
Next minute the little horror was pinching my toast! Well, it was the butter and jam that took her fancy. She even picked out a cherry and chewed it!
'Cats don't eat jam!'
'I do, Lil.'

I've tried everything to cover substrate, towels, kitchen roll, even a carpet tile, he will only eat it out of the metal tin. He's an oddball. He won't eat in a RUB either, my other two do but Duke won't. I'll keep trying different things to cover the substrate but now he's eating inside the hide I doubt there is anything I can do other than convert the whole tank to astroturf/reptile carpet stuff. |

I put a towel around the area Wendigo feeds a couple of hours before i feed her so i don't have to worry n__n |

Why not feed in a RUB ? I do that with mine, no risk of any substrate getting eaten, and you get to watch the whole show :) |
