Posted - 04/05/2011 : 22:27:03 MY HEAD HURTS!
been drawing up the plans and dimensions, for the three viv stack, first problem I hit, I measured up where it was going and the size each viv was needing to be in feet and inches, then had to convert to millimetres, then had to round off millimeters to make my board orders easier to cut. Then I decided it would work better and be more stable and less liable to bowing if it was the other way up. So the frame and backing is done, going to build that stage first, the glass will be ordered from my brotehr in law to be, he owns a glass manufacturing company so result (cough free cough cough).
So a sneaky peak, of the neat version and by neat I mean not totally chicken scratchings so I could visualise the layout while calculating the dimensions of individual pieces.
Watch this space to see this 6 foot wide 5 foot tall, 2 foot deep piece of furniture jump off the page and become a part of the living room. |

Posted - 20/06/2011 : 00:27:09 I figured the transfer from Duke's ambient to Spots ambient wouldn't be a vast amount (it would only be that way not the other as mats are contact heaters as Danny says). I was going to use a ceramic in the corn viv too but its overkill so just going to have him on a good quality mat instead and give him LEDs for his light, oh I'm in talks with the light manufacturer about a rig that dims the lights by timer & A REMOTE, I know I know totally unnecessary but just too cool and will provide full light in the day, a moon glow in the evening and switch off totally at night, if it was any more pimped it would bounce like a lowrider.
I'm well prepared for the high humidity, after a few coats of a white base coat the entire thing is getting 4 coats of Yacht varnish, it means a mass move out of the living room for the fumes and a few weeks without occupation but totally worth it for its ability to stand up to anything thrown at it. |

Posted - 19/06/2011 : 21:33:49 would only do that if spot was on a bulb, but because hes on a mat it wont raise the air temps much, so should be fine |

Posted - 19/06/2011 : 21:31:13 Bob - that is blinding me with science and looks brilliant!
However (and forgive me if I'm talking nonsense, not being the world's greatest technical genius) -
I notice you've got Spot's warm end next to Duke's cool end.
I once did this - I had Shahi's and Saada's vivs next to each other, and Shahi's warm end was next to Saada's cool end ... did that bugger up Saada's cool end temps or what? I had to move the vivs apart to get Saada's temps right ...
Just a fiddling point, and I know I'm no expert, but ... |

Posted - 19/06/2011 : 21:03:04 OK had a bit of a redesign and I'm so glad I did now, I've abandoned some of the shelves and turned it into another vivarium with 2 cupboards instead as I'm now going to be getting a crested gecko in a month or 2 so here are my superdooper vivstack plans mark II.
This is the final design now, I am not getting anymore animals (well a tarantula maybe coming home soon but that won't have a vivarium, maybe it will live in the cupboard, lol. |

Posted - 20/05/2011 : 13:59:59 i would still recomend drilling pilot holes in my professional opinion lol
we use self tappers at work and they do sometimes split the mdf if not pilot drilled |

Posted - 19/05/2011 : 12:19:32 I started out using glue but got fed up of cleaning up the bits that oozed out when i tightened up the screws so i gave up!
If you use turbo gold screws from screwfix they dont need pilot holes....bonus! I love self tappers! |

Posted - 18/05/2011 : 22:17:59 Oh good, because that could just end up messy. |

Posted - 18/05/2011 : 22:09:29 and also you wouldn't really need the glue. we don't use it when making wardrobes or kitchens out of mdf. the screws will be enough but its down to personal choice |

Thanks for that. I'm clueless when it comes to the building process. |

Posted - 18/05/2011 : 21:51:07 I'm the same, but I'm sure they will cut it straighter and neater than I ever could, plus its 25 pieces I honestly couldn't be annoyed cutting so many. If I could find someone to put it together for me for free I'd get that done too, lol. I'm trying to work out the best way to fix it together, I've settled on PVA and screws but now I have to decide what size how many etc, its doing my nut in but I'm getting there. I realised a stupid mistake I've had to put right, I had no access to the plugs once its bolted to the wall so have made a quick alteration to allow access underneath in a crisis. |

Posted - 18/05/2011 : 21:44:49 i bet you can't wait
i don't know how you could let someone cut it for you, i would be doing my nut and trying to get to the saw and do it myself lol |

Posted - 18/05/2011 : 20:38:21 WOOO! I have finally got the cut diagrams done for the nice man at B&Q, whittled it down to 4 sheets of MDF which is great, I thought it would be 5. I'm going to go visit him tomorrow and just check that he likes and can follow the diagrams (I'm not an engineer, they are basic) then I will buy the wood and get it cut next week. Exciting. |

Posted - 09/05/2011 : 19:41:43 OK cheers, will have a play and try work out the best way to do it. Not looking forward to any bit where I pass my plans to someone else, I'm one of those people that lives by 'if you want it done right, do it yourself'. |

Posted - 09/05/2011 : 19:38:42 You defo have to draw up the board cutting plans, i had a sheet with an 8 x 4 sheet drawn on it with all of my panels marked out. I then gave the poor bloke strict instructions on every cut, even had to tell him which cut to make first etc...!
The kerf of cut seemed a lot less than i thought, worked out at 1.5mm but when i went back with more cutting the kerf was 3mm so you need to allow for 3mm i reckon. |

Posted - 08/05/2011 : 22:19:07 Oh I have that board measurement but thanks for the info. I will go down and talk to the board cutting departement and show them whats what etc and see about getting it delivered, a friend is moving house in a few weeks so it might be cheaper if I volunteer my services as a driver and between us hire a transit. In fact I like that idea, I've never driven a van before. |

Posted - 08/05/2011 : 21:56:56 no that will be your job, im not a big fan of the staff in b&q lol you will need to allow for the saw cut too, if its the same thickness blade as our dimension saw at work it will be 3mm
and if it helps a board of mdf measures 1220mm wide x 2440 high |
