Posted - 07/05/2011 : 12:59:10 After fiddling with her viv to section it off we have left him a week with minimal disturbances , putting a cloth down at nite etc . he would be due a feed tonite , so we needed to check after the pink belly we noticed last time . having a red light meant we couldnt see his eyes properly so the missus scooped him up quickly and he is def dull and his eyes are blue . great the next stress ! lol . we popped him back really quick thinking he would retreat to his hide in a strop of stress . but no he came back out and is all over the place , up the glass , drinking lots , rubbing his face by the glass and inspecting things . he then went in his hide before coming back out again . then he vanished and now he is back up the glass ! its the most ive seen him since we have had him ! we arent gonna feed him tonite as he may well not eat it , so we will deal with this shed and then go from there ! i so hope he eats after this ! wot woot ! |

Posted - 08/05/2011 : 12:13:51 You get the joy of waiting for them shedding now. Won't be long.
Duke is doing fine, he is just getting massive, I think there is fertiliser in his substrate. I will be weighing him on Tuesday because I have a feeling he will be pushing the kilo mark (he has a few feeds in him though). I'll have him laid out on the floor to measue him too, I use a picture to do it so i'l post it, let you see how massive he is. |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 16:28:45 I doubt it very much that you'll see much more of him even with the alterations, I see Duke if I sneak in at night after I've gone to bed, thats Duke time. 27 isn't too warm, they are a tropical snake, my ambient is about 25oC but I'm not a wimp putting the heating on when its not winter , I think my windows are open from April onwards, I like been cool. The closer your waterbowl is to the heat source the quicker it evaporates, daily water changes will keep it clean and cool. I have a HUGE water bowl in for Duke, he is a big lad and if he wants to get in it he can (well part of him can, he is too big), a tip for you here though is underneath the substrate at the point of the water bowl, stick a couple of sheets of papertowel because when they do get in the water usually gets out and the towel stops it going too far.
I'm sure that everything you have done has made things more comfortable and its only a matter of time before he eats. Duke refused his first feed after a shed but he was a demon during shedding, hissing and very stroppy and obviously stressed out but has eaten everything put in front of him since. Your doing everything right, its all down to Zac now. |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 16:17:25 Yep will have a look round for a facecloth , I'm sure I have one somewhere ! He has a large water bowl in at the min and I've noticed that it evaportaing fairly qucik now the viv is smaller in size , after he has shed I'm thinkin of putting a smaller one in there . I've noticed wen the heating is on his cool end goes to 27 is this too high ? I'm excited to see if he ventures out tonite now after seein him so much this morning . But I think he is as blind as a bat so probably didn't realise it was day time . I'm impressed that he didn't hiss or be stroppy when the OH got him out earlier to check his eyes . I do hope his shed is fairly clean , he's caused so much stress already lol , and he's totally oblivious to us stressing about him lol . I have everythin crossed that its a good shed and then after he will be hungry enough to eat ! But we have made things smaller and used a black tea towel to make it dark at nite |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 14:00:08 It depends whether you have caught him just as he goes blue, or just as he is clearing. Duke was blue for 3 days and shed 4 days after he cleared but they are all different and there is a lot more skin to prepare on Duke, only thing I can say with certainty is within the next 3 weeks Zac will shed. If I was you I'd wet a face cloth (or flannel if thats what you call it) wring it out and place over the hot end hide, it will gently and steadily increase humidity. Humidity is seriously low in my house at the moment so Duke has a very well wrung out one constantly, it needs wetting every 2 days to keep it useful. If you do this it should HOPEFULLY reduce the chances of a bad shed and you having a nervous breakdown. |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 13:57:56 Bless him!
It's impossible to predict exactly how long they stay blue or clear for, but looking back in my tatty snake diary, Shahi, at about the same age and weight as Zac, was blue for 2/3 days and clear for 1/2 days before shedding. I've found that about average for a young royal - but they're all different lol!
All the best for his shed and his next meal! |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 13:46:12 Oh I'm hoping so , he looks skinny now , but I watched him drink lots of water . I was so pleased to see him out , he vansished and then just before I left for work he was up the glass again . So good to see him , I have fallen back in love with him again now haha ! We will be checking his viv to hear or see signs of shed . They weren't majorly blue , but def noticable . How long till he clears and sheds ? |

Posted - 07/05/2011 : 13:30:42 well if anything you now know what Zac's first visible sign of shedding is and will know next time when you see the pink belly whats to come. The exploring even when blue might just be a first little sign thats things are more comfortable for him now. I dont feed any of mine from when they go blue right through until after they shed, it does them no harm at all. You'll soon be listening out for any little rustling noises and checking to see if he is shedding. I have high hopes that he will eat after this and you'll notice a new snake coming out of that old skin. |
