Hello everyone, I was just wondering if you guys have done anything worth mentioning for snakes? Be it good publicity or a rescue it's all good work. I realize the usa is having a hard time right now fighting a ban on alot of snakes so goodluck to anyone there!

I show off my snakes at every opportunity and I resist the urge to wave them in the face of anyone terrified of snakes as I know it'll reinforce a bad stereotype snakes already have, any time I get a snake out with company I always manage to get somebody to touch them or at least try to educate people about them and to help show that they're not dangerous and aggressive but are in fact great pets.

My friend Lloyd who was in my last youtube video is now thinking about getting a royal so I think i've helped convert somebody too :D

Is there anything you guys think we could be doing but aren't?

Not really doing anything on public level but my girlfriend was scared of snakes, and still is to a degree. She didn't like them at all for no particular reason.
We eventually pinpointed the cause on the way they move, she compared it to an intestine or a bowel.
Gradually though I've managed to make her more confident around Dorian, she hasn't held him herself yet though. Today she watched him eat.

This is all good training as one day when I move out I would like a boa, and it's always a good idea to have a second person present with bigger snakes so someone can help me pry it off me if it's ticked off...

That's all sorted I got CRB checked last year when I got my security licence :)

If your going to look at doing some school work, you should in advance of this, get yourself an Enhanced CRB check, as no school will allow you to work with children without having this.

I took Harrison, Dinger (corn snake) and Max (monitor) with me to my work at a nursery (at request of the boss!) last week.
They were so well behaved! Plus the kids loved them.
Hopefull thats a few people now that wont be scared of snakes for no reason as they grow up

Yeah that seems to be the idea at the moment Repdanny just checking if I need a licence to do it at schools, most of the children party guys charge £110 per hour, I can half that without problem :)
reptiledanny Posted - 16/05/2011 : 08:18:17
The problem you have is advertising yourself out to get the recognition you need to make it a business. You could do a free reptile encouter at your local school, and then ask if you can hand out leaflets for say reptile party encouters, maybe for childrens party's or something like that

All 3 of my snakes are rescued snakes. Two were found wandering the neighbourhood and the last one wasn't wanted any more.
Like you Kelfezond, I like to introduce people to my snakes. Most people even if they don't like them are always fascinated.
My oldest son is very interested in them, especially the royal, and although he hasn't held her yet, I'm sure it'll happen one day.

Got a quote on the insurance i'd need today, mega cheap so I might give it a go :) long as people can pay enough to cover my fuel it'll be fun

Aww thats cute hehe, and a good idea I didn't think of roping my nephews and nieces into changing water for me lol!

My niece is obsessed with pandora at the moment, she can't pronounce her s yet but she runs in going '' caaakes! Cakes!''

You can get a converter that you wire up to your car battery and plug what you like in it :)

Thats all i talk about snakes to anyone who listens, my 4 year grand-daughter loves them, first thing she goes to when she comes from school to Izzys (corn) viv to see if she is out, if out she wants out, likes her head to go up her arm, and is fastinated when she feeds, then will do her bedding and water for me. Good job she cant get at Zuri, (too high up, he's my baby). Now I have spare viv she says that is for her snake. Dont think her dad would be too pleased.

If public liabilty was reasonable enough, I am sure a few of us wouldn't mind being part of the team.

Insulated boxes similar to what are used to transport frozen foods / rats would keep the snakes calm and warm. They could also be fitted with a heat mat/stat and run via an inverter for the duration of the car journey
Kelfezond Posted - 13/05/2011 : 19:01:58
Yeah tis a pain nobody makes snake jackets to keep them warm in english weather lol.
Lotabob Posted - 13/05/2011 : 18:55:44
You'd be hard pushed to do it for free as you would need public liability insurance to protect yourself and a way of transporting and heating.

You could get a Sooty van and convert it to a snakey van.

well we had one snake 1st march then 2 the first of april , im getting twitchy as there was no new addition the 1st may . and i have to wait till after september for another one , and i do believe the missus will make it the last one . she said to me there will come a time law when it has to stop , where wen i say no i actually mean it....aaaaaaaaahahahaha. yeah rite.

that sounds like a good plan , would def have to look into the insurance side tho ? i think loads of peope are scared of them until the actually see/ handle one
Kelfezond Posted - 13/05/2011 : 18:44:21
You're just normal I wen't from 0 to 6 in 6 months now I feel I have to buy a new one each month lol.

Feels like ive been keeping snakes far longer than half a year though :o

I'm running the idea around in my head about starting a business to show my snakes off at childrens parties or even to adults who might wwant to experrience them before buying or help conquer a fear. I'm just trying to work out if I can do it cheap enough to mmake it appealing as i 'm not interested in making money just showing the wonderful creatures off to people, i'd do it for free but I need enough for transport, housing and maybe insurance etc.
Laws Posted - 13/05/2011 : 18:33:22
i verbal vomit about my snakes to anyone that listens really lol! they are telling me about their kids and their kids doin their first steps and heres me going "yeah my royal had his first shed with me...." my sister isnt or shall i say wasnt keen on snakes at all , she stayed over the weekend and was so besotted with my one corn snake that she now wants one (my moms gona kill me! ) a few of my friends are fine with me having them out , aslong as i dont take them too close , but over time they said they will probably hold them . watched ur youtube vid with lloyd and i thought it was great , especially as u had a few that werent as docile as the others and is a good indicator should people not kno how to approach them inside their viv . (also love the vid of diablo falling, lol ) i think by spreading the word we are helping make people aware of what good pets they can make . people think im mad going from no snakes to three , with three more on my wishlist tho.....

(not necessarily us but us as in a reptile enthusiast) I'd love to see a proper educational television programme (me and the TV are good friends). One without all the bullmoose (essex jungle was full of it and wrong info), maybe a 50/50 mix, showing the reptile, how they are kept, temprement etc and then a bit about where they are from in the wild and how they live etc.
