I didn't know, as a matter of fact - I always thought 'Echidna' was the Latin name of the spiny ant eater, but never came across it in mythology (or heard it and forgot - I were nobbut a lass then and all this round here were fields!) Just googled her and found that she's the mother of most of the mythological monsters.
They seem to have been heavily into shape changing in classical mythology - like that one about Zeus turning into the swan - 'take me to your Leda!'
