Posted - 27/06/2011 : 22:41:52 i am here writing in the corner of my very dark living room lol
Just tried feeding chancho for the first time... warmed up a *ahem* tasty rat pup... didn't hold out much hope seeing as it was his first but...
BOOM!
dangled the mouse by the entrance to his warm hide for about 5 secs and suddenly it's gone!
then he realised i was there.... and i still needed to put his water back (i was expecting him to come out to it for some reason (even though don't they eat in burrows where they hunt in the wild... i don't know maybe i made that bit up) So then he decides to look round... i hid behind the sofa....some sort of mexican stand off of me checking he's gone back inside his hide and there he is staring right back lol
Anyway.. he's just slithered back inside... so hopefully he's chowing down as i type!
the trouble is.... should i leave him to digest and if it smells iffy disturb him and remove the rat as i hasn't eaten it... it's impossible to tell! i think i'll give him a couple of days... if it stinks then he's decided to keep the rat as a room mate rather than lunch and i'll venture in lol
So i wont speak to soon and say he's eaten... but you never know! and that strike was awesome! |

Aww bless him and congrats - the Great Chancho did his conjuring trick again eh?
It's so lovely when they're confident like that - he sounds like my Surahi - the first time she met me she wrapped herself round my neck and it was love at first coil lol.
He'll soon be having his armchair walkies by the sound of things.
aww he is lovely! so much better when they are confident, i was worried that would get a really hide-away-er who didn't tolerate handling, i feel so lucky! He sounds just like your Surahi, he did the exact same thing when i chose him in the shop! we couldn't put him away to take him home, he would have been quite happy sitting on my shoulders for the drive home i think!! |

Posted - 07/07/2011 : 11:41:21 YAY!
He ate again on tuesday night... and it was hilarious!
i had to go to my friends wedding rehearsal up north (I'm maid of honour and had no idea where to stand etc, been to one church wedding in my whole life, and i've never been a bridesmaid!). Didn't get home in London til about 1am...sooo sleepy! but snakes needed their noms!
Sanchez the corn was looking dreadful as he's blue so he didn't bother, as usual for him. Betty the other corn normally snaffles her meal straight away but decided she wanted to play run off and wiggle everywhere, and then decided to eat in the most awkward position balanced on the side of a rub, so i had to keep watch so she didn't do a runner mid-mouse, so she took forever to feed.
Then for the first time i actually saw Chancho out of his hide, he must have smelt dinner!
So i took his rub off the shelf, expecting him to hide, no instead he decides his wants walkies and starts trying climb into my hair (and i'm so sleepy at this point and it's nearly 2am!) so i pop him back into the rub and get his rat, next thing i know he's up-periscope about a foot out of his rub (wish i had my camera!) so i dangle the rat in front, he strikes and half coils then spends about 20 mins trying to get it in his belly because he landed back in a funny position, he proper wrestles with it as if its alive, perhaps he would like a knife and fork!!
He is so funny, i've tried to resist handling but he comes out whenever you change the water and climbs up my arm, and the few times i've taken him him out just for a quick check over he doesn't ball up he decides to climb into my hair or try stick himself up my nose. i don't think he knows what kind of snake he is... i was so worried that i'd get a stressy royal that doesn't like to come out at all and doesn't eat, but i'm not worried anymore! i'm not giving him the full arm chair walkies yet as i don't want to push my luck, but i'm really pleased with him already, he's a real cheeky boy! |

Well done Chancho! |

Ha ha nice one. I have this problem too cause for the last couple of meals Cerberus has just looked at me as if I've gone mad, how dare I be impertanant (no good at spelling sorry lol) enough to handle his food (anyone would think he's a royal or something), so I've left it for him, covered his viv up and checked a few hours later and I'ts gone, but have to admit I've always checked in his hide just to make sure....
haha, love it! i can just picture a royal going "how very dare you!" for touching his dinner! |

Ha - bet that gave you a surprise! Good lad!
I have this trouble with Saada and Surahi, who DON'T strike ...I have to leave the rat at the hide entrance and if they pull it right inside I'm left worrying where is the rat? In the snake or still in the hide? In my experience, if he hasn't eaten ratty, your nose will definitely tell you by tomorrow morning. I just open the viv door and sniff ...
But with any luck he's taken it - fingers crossed!
lol i hope you're right! i didn't open the RUB this morning, but the living room was like an oven this morning... if there's a dead rat not inside a snake today i would definitely have smelt it! Might have a peek tonight though just in case. |
