obviously if you get bit you should wash your hands to stop any infection, but im talking more serious?
I have heard you can catch measles, and be infected with salmonella.
are these misconceptions or fact?
salmonella poisoning is probably real as the bacteria is in most species crap.

Posted - 14/07/2011 : 13:09:20 I'm not sure but I think some snakes carry cryptosparidium I know that leopsrd geckos are prone to getting it, which can infect humans It's a gastric bug and usually kills the reptile infected with it as there is no specific cure for reptiles anyway, but as with anything reptile following proper hygiene rules should prevent this... |

Posted - 13/07/2011 : 18:08:58 My very first corn snake caresheet said that you've got a greater chance of catching salmonella from a cream cake or a dog (though naturally you should take all the hygiene precautions you would normally take - snake mess is after all the result of carnivore eating, same as a cat's or dog's, though dogs do tend towards the omnivorous, I know.)
Same here - never heard about measles. Reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes story - 'Oh the speckled band!'
And as for speckled cream cakes - avoid! |

Posted - 13/07/2011 : 18:06:11 Measles is a new one. The three things snakes and humans can get are: Salmonella, cambylobacter. Both these are bacteria, and are present in the gut of all animals, washing your hands and not licking the reptile is the best way to prevent catching this. The other one snakes can have and can infect us is worms, washing your hands and not eating snake poo should prevent this. Finally as above a snake bite can become infected so disinfect any bite wounds, pick out any teeth and then keep it clean and dry while it heals. |
