Posted - 17/10/2011 : 12:40:39 Just realised, I never answered your question - the next size up from the largest weaner is a small (adult) rat. A&N sell these as weighing 106g approx - the next size up from that is a medium rat at 162g! But from what I read on here again there are huge variations from supplier to supplier. I reckon that if you can't depend on the shop, the tape measure/scales are definitely the best way to go. |

Posted - 16/10/2011 : 20:34:33 Yeah i used to do that to,however pet shop rats/mice will never be dead on each week. They will try and sell you small as med,and so on from time to time.
Anyway i just pick them myself from the freezer. |

Posted - 16/10/2011 : 19:44:47 I actually made my reptile shop weigh rats for me lol. They had to dig a set of scales out of the back room. |

Posted - 16/10/2011 : 18:33:14 Yes, a large mouse and a small weaner rat weigh about the same. A rat has a heavier, blunter head, though, with almond shaped eyes; a mouse has a pointier, 'prettier' face (though I think rats are lovely lol.)
Here is a rat weaner and large mouse ...

Posted - 16/10/2011 : 18:27:06 Thanks bats will take the scales with me because I've had all different sizes and weights off them, esp. when i get xl mice for Izzy and they look like identical twins, i can only tell by the tails the rats seem smaller tails |

Posted - 16/10/2011 : 18:23:14 Aha! Digs out the old A&N Frozen table ...according to them, at 10/15% of Zuri's weight, he should be on an extra large weaner, approx 80gm. But that's the biggest estimate, at the top end for his weight.
Their large weaners are approx 55g. Would still be fine for him.
However, not all suppliers are as precise as A&N - TSM, another frozen food supplier (and still very good) just supplies packs of 'weaners' - young sub-adult rats of varying sizes ...pet shops can be wildly inaccurate.
Another good guide can be to feed a rat with a girth no larger than the royal's ...people HAVE been known to take a tape measure along to the shop lol, and why not?
Sorry this is a bit vague. |
