my 2 year old royal has just got caught inbetween his cage door hinges, after 10 mins gentle negociation i managed to free him but every time i tried to free him he was squashed even more as the door tightened, he was only trapped the top half of his body,no head damage but is now making a quiet wheezing sound, im very worried and would really appreciate any advice or reassurance,many thanks |

Snakes are not a social animal and although they may not fight as we would think they might, biting etc they do compete. When they fight its very rarely in an injuring way its more of a domination thing, pushing the weaker one out of the best spot etc . My personal approach would be to never cohabit any snakes and give them all their own best spot etc. With breeding then its slightly different but even then its a case of introduce, let them do the fandango and then back to separate digs the rest of the time.
Glad to hear snakey is OK, I didn't think it could have done any major injury by getting itself stuck maybe just squeezed its own lung and was just catching its breath or something. |

thanks for all ur help and advice,he seems as naughty as usual back to roaming his cage and all sorts of acrobatics and feeeding,just waiting to see poop and i hope hes all clear x many thanks ps do royals settle in together or when introduced would they fight? ez now |

Yes, good to hear - they're pretty tough, but they do worry you when they get up to tricks like that. |

yea im late to bed and abrupt too boss no offence taken,he stopped wheezing after 10 mins and has eaten and behaved regular little scoundrel as usual, as to how he was trapped, on the ecoterra vivs the doors open outwards leaving a cm gap,as i went to fill his water with the door left open,naturally he enquired his way thru the gap, he still is fully agile and just as playfull so fingers crossed. thx for ur help |

What type of 'viv' do you have? I have never seen one with exposed hinges large enough to trap a Royal, even a small one. Purely as a warning to anyone with the same who makes it, size etc it would be beneficial to disclose this information.
As for the snake I would also say a trip to the vets is your best option though I cant think of a way that getting stuck in a gap has been anything but a traumatic event as you'd need to really force the gap a lot smaller to damage the ribs as they are very flexible. This is not to say it shouldn't be checked out but you are the best judge as to the size of the gap and the force you exerted on the snake to free it.
My boa got trapped in a plastic lid and it did require force to gently feed her back through but I didn't push her body beyond its limits and other than a few damaged scales she was unhurt. A similar thing happened to my corn snake in a encounter with a small drilled air hole (6mm wide) but he just had his head stuck, again with manipulation he was freed with no ill effect. In fact snakes are stupid lol. |

Hi, yes, I'd definitely recommend a specialist reptile vet as most small animal vets won't have the knowledge of snake physiology - don't know where you are of course, but here is the list of vets recommended on here -

thx for ur advice hes not that large so the gap when the viv doors are open was far too tempting for him to exlore through obviously he only wanted to get through the gap rather than retreat.i will researchany vets do most vets treat snakes or does it have to be a reptile specialist? many thnks and what country are u in to respond so vigilantly |

I'm sorry I really don't understand how this happened, I can't picture a vivarium with hinges that would allow something the size of a large Royal to become trapped - this doesn't matter though, what does, is the health of your pet: I'm not vet, nor is anyone here that I know of. Wheezing is not a good sign regardless, couple this with the huge possibility that the snake has a crush injury to its neck or upper body (broken ribs?), personally, I would not be taking chances and would be calling a reptile vet at 8:00am sharp. No ifs, no buts. |

Oh poor guy. Very sorry to hear about his accident, and would recommend that you get him to a reptile vet as soon as possible to check him out for any fracture/bruising. He could well be in a lot of pain. The vet is the best person to advise you and treat the snake in this case, I think.
All the very very best with him and keep us posted as to how he goes on. |
