Last year we all out walking in a forest Fochabers..NE Scotland and heard a strange call. It was a bird, sounding distressed so we followed the call.

After maybe 15 mins we stood before a huge tree, and I saw a black lump..we were a good 25m away. Then the lump moved and Steve took this pic.

Standing below and looking up, it had two things hanging down, the pic just shows one..they were straddling the branch. One appeared to be a tail..the second was the same length, but we were just too far for a camera phone to pick up with clear detail.

So what animal is up in this tree?

It definately wasn't a bird..its tail had to be at least 30" long, and whatever it was straddled the branch with tail and a hind leg dangling.
I watched for about 20 mins and the only movement was its tail swish ocassionaly.

It was a standoff between the mystery beast and the agitated bird.

Possibly a bird of prey with its prey and its chick calling for dinner.

There could have been more than one bird - one was raising the alarm while its mate was killed.

The bird was still calling when we left..its slightly out of view, you can't see the bird as its too high and the phone didn't zoom in far enough :)

So whatever it was, it was a lone animal.

Possibly Gmac, but don't they call out with a Scottish accent? LOL

This is a pine marten - bird could have been shrieking just before it was killed and you saw the pair of them tangled up together.

Aye could be Bats, what was strange tho was the tail hanging down beside a leg..the tail was sleek like a cat, and the hind leg quite thick and muscular looking.

I sent that pic into the local newspaper and was unindated with calls lol..they published my full name gr

The bird was agitated but would not move from perhaps its nest.
