Hi,

I was just wondering what people consider to be the best way to Bake/Boil forest floor bark in order to rid it of Mites etc before putting it in a viv?

I have seen much debate on this would like some more opinions from people who keep Ball/Royal Pythons.

Thanks

Ant

I cant remember what its called but you can now get a rubber bark type reusable substrate, which I wouldn't mind trying

15 mins gas mark 6/180 should do it no need to boil it!:)

If it is store bought you dont have to do anything with it. If it is wet then you can heat it in the oven to dry it out a bit but it should be free of anything nasty. If you mean literally taking stuff from the forest and sterilising it I would first boil it to rid it of the high amounts of stuff that will stain the snake's belly brown, once the water stops been brown then its ready for baking.

Freezing does not do the same job, if it survives British winters (ie most wild nasties) it will survive freezing, even the mites can survive freezing (in egg form I believe).

I freeze mine, does pretty much the same job.

when ive dried out coco fiber in the oven i put foil in the bottom of a baking tray an baked the coco fiber at around 120 and stirred it around every 10 minutes or so

do you know how long for and what temp? do you need to cover it in foil or anything? this is the first time I will have done it and would like a home to live in afterwards lol!

think you just bake it in the oven till its dry but keep an eye on it while it in the oven
