Was just wondering what peoples oppinions were on this program and Gordon's idea?
Mine is that I agree with what he's trying to do. I think it's high time people started trying to change things rather than hide the problems.
You can see in the program that some of those people are really enjoying the cooking and acheiving something. Some aren't bothered. But the ones that are proove that there's a chance for them to change, that they actually want to change if given the chance. You can see that little sparkle when Gordon mentions that by joining in with the cooking etc then it might lead somewhere good for them in the future.
Was watching it last night and one of the cops just p****d me off to be honest. He just came across as so cocky and up his own backside. I'm afraid I have no patience for people like him. It's a shame he seems to have a lot of say-so as well though.
But never mind that, all in all I think it's a good idea. What do you think? Could it work in the long run if people were willing to carry on trying and not to give up on those of them that want to be helped?
I know it's not the same thing, but despite my phobia I occationally work with teenagers (I know, not everyone's cup of tea!) with behaviour problems. We draw and craft and talk about things. These kids often live in broken homes, some are beaten at home or bullied at school etc. As a result they often have short tempers and can lash out at people.
But I often see such a big difference in them when I work with them. Just having that time to chill out and talk to someone about anything, even something meaningless or silly, seems to do good for them. They're happier and calmer. Their whole personallity can change.
It can be a dangerous thing to do. They can't always control what they do so if they got mad all of a sudden someone could get hurt. But I've never got hurt myself. I think they just forget to get mad sometimes. But I know there's always that risk and I still do it.
...I know, Anthropophobic lass working with teenagers with short tempers and sharp things. Wierd right?... but generally I get the 'Nice kids'.
I really don't mean to brag... sorry if it comes across that way, but I suppose it means I can see the potential with these prisoners 'cause I can compare them with the kids I get. That's why I mention it. Doing something fun and productive seems to make things better for the kids, so why not try it with adults?
Would anyone agree?

The reason longer servers where offered the courses was due to the length of course, I do think alot more training should be given, but at the same time more should be done to help them find work for once they are out, this way they will have an income and be less likely turn back to crime |

I do see what your saying there. And I know that for some people the life they live is better, even with prison, than any alteritive they can find. And to be honest they're probably quite right. At least for the minuet with the way things are. And that's another problem. People are turning bad 'cause it's a better life that anything good. But for those that don't want to live that way it's made ever harder for them to change 'cause no-one is willing to help, or so it might feel to them. So they just carry on. Those are the people that I think should be reconized, don't you agree? They do want help and most are willing to work for it, so is it not about time we listened and did something about it before things get even worse?
You say the prison offered training for the longer-time inmates, but does that mean the newer inmates didn't get offered anything? Why not? Is it not a better idea to nip it in the bud while these people are still able to be helped/taught? Do you see where I'm coming from? It's all very well to offer the longer-time servers training but to be honest by that time I think a lot of them will be too set in their ways to want/be able to change.
Does anyone agree? Or maybe not? |

I would like to disagree that prison does not work, some people come out never to get in trouble again, I served time in an 18-21s and I have not been in trouble since, they offered training to long servers to help people find work once out, all j will say is some people like the life of crime, it also pays far better then any job I have ever had you just have to be able to deal with spending time in prison. |

I'm not all that suprized, really, that it hasn't been tryed before, not properly anyway, but maybe Gordon could get things started for others? Maybe show them that it's not always that bad? I mean the idea of walking into a prison and starting telling the people there what to do does seem like rather a daunting prospect! But I don't think it's just that that puts people off. The security seems just as intimidating to me. In the program Gordon has to go through six security doors (as far as I can remember) which can take two hours, to then have the kitchen door locked behind him so he's locked in with the criminals. There are guards in the room too if anything goes wrong, but that would put me off just as much I think. By the time your done with all that and then checking everything is in place etc then everyone is going to already be a bit ratty for waiting so long before you can even start : / |

I haven't seen the program but the concept is great, prison just doesn't work. but if the prisoners are given some education and career training such as cooking it will change things no end.

I also agree that making them useful and feel useful is a much better way of dealing with crime than just locking them away for X amount of time. I havent seen the programme though I did mean to though as I like Gordon Ramsey, the no BS approach is definitely my approach to things.
And brag away, what you do is brilliant, should be very proud of yourself for it. |
