Posted - 15/01/2013 : 00:14:23 Right.. So i went and picked up my 2 royals today which the previous owner said to be in a full setup.
upon loading it into the car and bagging the 2 royals which i fell in love with as soon as i saw them, everything seemed fine! Apart from both the royals have a scuff, one more serious that the other and the owner told me that they had gone into a drawer of some sort and scuffed on the way out and that he treated it with nurobol. they look to be healing fine although one of them is very white/no scales on one spot..
upon arriving home i set up the dual viv.. I was told there were 2 heat bulbs and 2 heat mats all statted and ready to go.
But i found the bottom viv only had a 1.0 UVB in it and the top viv a 60w ceramic and also a double fitting for a UVB but NO BULB GUARDS :/ .. the heat mat in the top viv was so tiny i quickly replaced it with a larger one i had and statted the mats before putting in the aspen and hides ect.. which now leads me to a bunch of questions so i can get these babys how they should be and feel comfortable!
Note: I feel glad to have taken them from the old owner as i can get them set up properly now as quick as i can, I am buying guards tomorrow. and anything else i need to get them set up perfectly. i also feel very bad on having them without all the correct equipment :(
1. will a 60w be hot enough to heat a 2x2x2.5 vivarium? 2. the light holder is bayonet type in the second viv, will it need to be changed for a screw in for the correct heating and what watt is recommended for a 2x2x1.5 i think (which is the bottom viv on the stack) 3. what stat shall i buy for the lights and can i run both off one stat? 4. what do you recommend i do for now? i am keeping mats on on stat all the time but don't really wanna turn bulbs on without a guard although i don't think with the size they are they will be able to reach the bulbs.. and what preferred temp should i keep the mats? as ive heard various answers.. and what temp should the ambient be?
i will appreciate any help and advice i can take! thankyou! |

a 60w might just cut it but your better off going for a 100/150w then the bulb wont have to work as hard. 2. the light holder is bayonet type in the second viv, will it need to be changed for a screw in for the correct heating and what watt is recommended for a 2x2x1.5 i think (which is the bottom viv on the stack)
yes you want to change it to a screw fitting, get yourself one of these(1000w rated) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CERAMIC-VIVARIUM-HEAT-BULB-LIGHT-LAMP-HOLDER-REPTILE-/220745245960?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects&hash=item3365712508 3. what stat shall i buy for the lights and can i run both off one stat?
you want a dimmer or pp thermostat and your better off using one stat for each bulb, its too risky running 2 from ceramic's one stat as if something fail's it's going to get very very hot.
4. what do you recommend i do for now? i am keeping mats on on stat all the time but don't really wanna turn bulbs on without a guard although i don't think with the size they are they will be able to reach the bulbs.. and what preferred temp should i keep the mats? as ive heard various answers.. and what temp should the ambient be?
what size are the royal's? leave them on the mat's for now an get the ceramic's, stat's an guard's sorted as soon as you can
Thankyou! i will order the fittings asap and what bulbs would you recommend? thanks for all the advice!
one is 9 months old and she is very small, the other 18 months and about a foot and a half long.
haven't had chance to weigh them as there in there 7 day settle period. the previous owner said they have been feeding once a week fine, and have been in that setup for months.. although today i looked in and the small female is curled around the top on the back of the uvb light. (which is not on of course) although Im worried shes going to get cold because shes far from her heat mat :/ .. thanks again |
