My royal had very mild symptoms of R.I this time last year. I upped his temps for a week and checked on him closely everyday. There was no bubbling at the mouth, only very quiet sighs and wheezing here and there. I got an appointment with a specialist vet in my area a week later, and he told me that the infection had cleared up as I had caught it early. There were no antibiotics involved. I spent £40 on his information and I don't want that to happen again.
A week ago I got him out ready for his feed and I heard the familiar wheezing sounds again. As I had experienced it last year I kinda knew what to do. I upped the temps and looked online for different methods. I was told by a friend who also owns royals to use the olbas oil and Vicks method. I have done this 3 times and I haven't heard any noises or seen any bubbles or odd behaviour. He is happy and the same inquisitive self. I managed to catch it early last time and it cleared away quickly. I'm hoping it's done the same now as it's been a week since it discovered it and I haven't heard anything since.
I just wanted to know if I have done things correctly and if I need to do anything else to make sure it I has cleared. I understand R.I can lead to fatalities and that's why I'm eager to hear from anybody who has had the same problem. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!

It can be hard to differentiate between their normal breathing noses sometimes and initial signs of an RI. It's not unusual to hear loud exhales or the odd clicking, which could just be a bit of old shed. If there is no signs of mucus in or around the mouth especially when the head is lower than the body it is probably nothing. Additional home treatment can involve the use of an f10 solution in a nebuliser. We have just bought one but off the top of my head I can't remember the procedure. Someone else will probably expand on that.
Having said that 40 pounds for piece of mind and the snakes wellbeing isn't too bad, plus you can pick the vets brains for future reference while your there. |
