Ziggy the albino has been with us for 10 days now.

I have posted pics of his viv and set up in the picture section and he is heated with a heatmat and stat. Digitally monitored.

Prior to having him he was in a reptile shop in a small rub heated with a heat wire?

We tried to feed him on Tuesday which was 7 days after his last feed in the shop, but he showed no interest.

I changed his viv around and put more thing in ie. tubes and extra greenary so he has plenty of places to hide, and I have refrained from turning his light on so he can settle. Apart from changing his water, I havent bothered him at all, until this morning to check him over.

He seems fine and was quite curious when out and showed no signs of being stressed or pre shed, so defrosted his mouse to try and feed again today.

He rejected again.

Should I be worried???

I am a bit concerned as I have been reading all these threads about other snake passing away for no apparent reason, and I dont want this to happen to Ziggy as he is a special boy.

He did poo the other day and weighs 186grams which is about right for his age. I think he is 12 months around December time.

I plan to leave him another 5 days before trying again to feed, with no handling or contact. Is this just a settling in problem do you think????

My other Royals seem to have settled in straight away, but then they are babies so knew no different, but as he was in a rub prior to being here maybe he just needs extra time to settle???

UPDATE:

Ziggy been sitting in water dish - possibly pre shed???

Having been without food until the mouse fluffs want to be sure it doesnt take it out of him if he is - pre shed I mean.

Anyway tried tempting first with small mouse, not interested today, whereas he usually shows some response.

Assist fed mouse really easily he coiled it and ate - so happy days, another feed for Ziggs!!

Sounding promising. Good luck with next feed, maybe he'll strike and eat.

Tried Ziggy this evening with a small mouse - he struck hit it and backed off - tried again a few times but he kept shying away.

Got two mouse fluffs out of the freezer and successfully assist fed both and he seemed to really enjoy.

I know this isnt the ideal solution, but at least he has had something to eat, as he has lost another 5grams in the past week.

Just shut them out of the room and tell them to get their own pets to look after
wolfspirit Posted - 19/08/2009 : 19:29:00
i agree feed whilst the kids are out...

i am lucky in that whilst we hate it, my sons have a better attitude about it than me...

i cant do the multis that way...even though the females are as nasty as a great white, they are just to cute...

Well on the subject of live weaners - when we went to pick up Wincey the spider on tuesday - I asked the breeder for advice on Ziggy and he offered me a live mouse to bring home and try.

I brought it into the house and my eldest son (nearly 16) had a head fit that we were going to feed this mouse to Ziggy.
He was concerned that the mouse might bite Ziggy but also concerned for the welfare of the mouse. I was quite shocked at his reaction and as we had visitors turn up whilst he was ranting, they ended up taking the mouse home and adopting it for a pet.

What on earth am I supposed to do if I have to go down that route???

Hubby says feed whilst kids in school so he doesnt get to see!!

Kids eh!!

He's in the rub - all overcrowded and inside the viv he was in on a heat mat. Fingers crossed now that this will do the trick!!

UPDATE;

Tried again last night, no joy.

First thing in the morning going to Staples to buy a rub, going to try going down that road as that is what he was used to being in.

Had hoped he would settle in and be on display as he is so stunning, but alas, his welfare is more important and this seems to be our only option before he takes a downhill turn.

Will keep you updated.

I really dont want to go down that road (live feeding) - would rather try different food sources first.
Havent weighed him for a week or so will after next feed attempt if he doesnt eat.
Blackecho Posted - 12/08/2009 : 18:49:05
If a Royal isn't losing weight then he's fine. I agree with your friend to keep trying what you are, although I wouldn't say you need to live feed in 2 weeks if he still isn't losing weight.

Ok, managed to get a lift today to see breeder, and ask him what he advised with Ziggy. He seemed happy that he has not lost that much weight and reckons that because he is striking it is just a matter of time.

He told me to forget about assist feeding and carry on doing what I am doing basically.

If in two weeks he still hasnt fed then he suggests trying live.

I did enquire about multis but he has just started to breed them so nothing to sell at the moment.

Feel a bit better at the thought of not having to assist, as that was really stressful.

Will update next time and thanks for all the advice. :)

wait till the day comes when you have to live feed...

its really really horrid, though it is getting less horrid by the week now..it is still not nice..
