I want to put aspen into Velvet's viv, at the moment she has unprinted newspaper. To prevent direct contact with the heatmat underneath [even though it's controlled by a thermostat & has a thermometer there] should i keep a layer of newpaper over the mat, under the aspen? Or just go ahead with aspen alone?
I want to introduce her to outside feeding, as she eats in her viv at the moment. If she doesn't take to it, a bit of aspen accidentally going down wouldn't hurt her would it?

every snake is different, both mine will eat it where they grab it, but iv seen some snakes grab them and take them into there hides to eat it in piece |

When I feed Orlina I put a couple of bits of kitchen roll on the aspen in front of the hide she's in so the mouse never touches the aspen |

how does this work do you need to cover the whole viv including hides?

Is this stuff okay?
it's "Zoo Med Reptile Eco Earth Coconut Substrate" an it's soft i a break it off into a fine bedding.
so far he seems okay and his poos are fine but he has a habbit of moving it about off the platform i put it on while he's manoeuvring it down his throat.
I'd like to know if there is a problem long term feeding like this.

Bose - yeah i used to do that with my kingsnake but had a bad experience with little critters in the aspen. Not mites though luckily. Might do that then, and feed on a piece of paper. Part of the reason i was thinking of feeding outside of the viv was because i didn't want her associating viv = food or my hand = food.
Righto. aspen it is. And i need to find a large java branch but the nearest [decent] reptile store to me is about 30 miles away & i don't want to buy online as i'd like to choose my own shape/size etc.
I want payday to come quickly so i can start packing out her viv :D |

There is no need to feed outside the viv unless you're worried about her ingesting substrate, and as Boze said putting some paper down before you feed her will sort that.
I put newspaper under the aspen, it makes cleaning out easier as I can roll up the paper and it takes most of the aspen with it just leaving a few bits to sweep up. |

i put a glass work top protector on top as there conduct the heat so i was able to reduce the temp on stat so saving money on heating and its washable and it doest move about like lino and has its a proper one it wont break with the heat !! |

It could hurt her, if feeding in the viv just put some newspaper or kitchen roll or something on top of the substrate first, then feed her :-)
As for keeping her off the heatmat, a lot of people seem to use a piece of lino. Works well and is waterproof.
