How do I know of my ball python is burning

A hatchling or very young adult - Shahi was about 6 months old I think when I changed to IR. He was a big lad for his age though - 300g+. He might have been safer for a while longer but since I'd got the thing set up I ditched the mat, especially as the stink of overheated snake wee is a bit ...well you get the idea lol!  |

Ah, I see - (we overlapped). Yes, it's true royals sense heat most intensely via their facial pits (for sensing body heat of prey) and don't sense it as accurately through their skin as mammals do.
It's also true that a mat in a viv where the snake's in direct contact, even statted, can overheat (thermal blocking) if a heavy bodied snake basks on it, and, since the snake may not sense in time if its belly's burning, it will end up with burns.
So, if your royal's only a baby, even on a mat in a viv, he'll be safe on a mat for a while, as long as it's statted of course, but if he's any size at all, best to switch to a bulb, also statted and guarded of course.
As long as he's small and you have a stat and keep checking temps, I reckon you'll be fine.

Well you measure the temperature with a thermometer.
If your snake is burnt you'll know because you can visually see the scales off colour and turn crispy. If you have him in a RUB and your heat mat is underneath the rub itself he won't burn.
They only burn if they are in direct contact with a heat mat which is set too high |

Do you mean too hot? Your thermostat and thermometers should tell you. If you've got them set up ok they should protect the snake.
Many royals seem to favour their cool ends, so don't be anxious if yours is doing this; keep checking your temps are ok and if the little guy needs to thermoregulate, he'll move to the warmer end. |
