I kno there are a million and one threads on mites , and stickies , but im still in a tizz and feel awful :(

So ive read the following that ardap , callingtons , mite off and s few others are all the best . but which is the best out of all of them ?

I noticed the first little bugger by accident it was on my thumb and i squashed it and it crunched and left bllody goo , it was only small so i then inspected his rub and found 2 more tiny ones , non in the water bowl and i cant really see any on him .

i washed my hands and then checked my other two and they have now got mites too ( ive kept the snakes quarentined , and they have still invaded!) the sunglow has one or 2 on her paper however i cant see any on her and i would have thought it would have been pretty obvious to see being the light colour she is (i know kno the males are a light colour and hard to see and its only females that get bigger )

I then checked my biggest boa lex and found a BIG bugger (i swear it flipped me off as it crawled across the paper!) , and on inspecting her hide found three more big ones , its hard to spot them on her body (my eyes are awful as it is lol)

So ive now took everything out of everyones enclosure , they are all on kitchen roll , most fake plants have been soaked in a bucket and wood has been in the oven . all they have is a water bowl each and the two little boas have egg boxes for hides and lex has her normal hides as i dont have anything big enough to give her and shes a shy one .

So whats my next step ? before i get mouse happy online to sprays , which ones in ur opinion work best ? i dont want to get front line as i hear it can be bad for young snakes and even watered down can cause problems , the same with ardap as i dont have enough spare places to put them while i fumigate the vivs .

can i soak them in olive oil ? and then soak them in water ? can u put olive oil straight onto them ?

*shudders* hate creepy crawlys! would i need to use anything else to get rid of mites outside the vivs / rubs etc ?

My other concern is i have crested geckos , are they all at risk also ?

Any help greatly appreciated :(

Don't - it could happen to any of us and our snakes, at any time. It's only like cat or dog fleas. You'll zap the little buggers sooner or later! All the best! xxx

I'm gonna oil bath them tonite and soak them for an hour or so until the callingtons arrives . Sadly all three have them despite being careful . I feel awful :(

when bow had mites, i wanted to try the natural method. she got bathed everyday with an oil bath, usually in the morning, and then in the afternoon she would get wiped down with the oil. her cage got cleaned out every day, and within a week i couldnt see anymore mites. i kept it up for 2 weeks and never had a problem since. worked for me, but only one of mine was infected with the things.

Bath the snake, treat the enclosure. Mites drown in water so that's all you need to rid the snake of any on it. You then use the chemicals etc (your choice on which) on the enclosure with the snake elsewhere. When it dries snakey can go home. keep on paper with minimum furniture and keep at it until the life cycle of the mite is broken and you should be free. Also advise the persons you got snakes off recently as its the most likely source.

Hi Laws, very sorry to hear. There's a discussion on oil baths and lots of info on this thread.

Fingers crossed and all the best with zapping the little dastards!

i wouldn't bother with mite off, i believe it doesn't have an active ingredient to kill the mites. even a chap in a rep shop said its no good

if you use frontline you need to be careful not to get it on the head of the snake, and i think it needs to be diluted too as its quite strong stuff

i can fully recommend callingtons, used it a couple of times and works a treat

in the mean time you can give the snake a warm bath with olive oil in to get rid of some of the little buggers

hope you get rid of them soon

Laws I know how you feel, Slinky and Fea both have mites. I called my reptile vet, then went to the surgery to collect Frontline..this is what he told me to do.

Empty the viv and soak it and contents in a 10% bleach solution for 2 hrs. Anything that can't be bleached, throw out..things like bark.

Using a cotton wool ball gently wipe down the snakes, starting from just behind the head..belly too

Rinse the viv and contents..spray a little frontline inside the hides, and nooks and crannies..remove the water dish for 24hrs..that's the danger if a snake ingests.

I have a Beardie..I forgot to ask about him, my snakes are young as well..3months.

I hope this helps
