Posted - 02/02/2012 : 20:03:40 I just took Slinky out and he seemed a little more nervous than usual. I'm not sure about his eyes so took a pic on my camera phone to show you guys.

Posted - 03/02/2012 : 10:34:29 I have to reguarly do a Rofous beaked snake. Some reason he fails on the same eye every time. If you look down on the head and try to compare the eyes if there is a retained cap you can see a difference in the colour/ clarity from one side to the next. Instead of baths and ear buds as a start, nip down to your local pharmacy and get some Viscotears. Small blob of that once a day for two days will do the trick. If it doesn't come off itself then after a 3rd blob and a gentle touch from a rubber thimble has never failed.
Visco tears is better than water IMO as it holds moisture and gets under the cap. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 22:54:51 Thank you Rob
It is like a liquid, no dried skin left on him. I'll try with a damp kitchen roll tomorrow..thanks I feel much happier :)
He only shed last night, so that sounds like the problem as there are no edges around either eye. Just looks coated in a clear sticky substance. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 22:52:50 They don't always look crackly - to my shame I found a retained eyecap on Surahi, and it looked fine - it was just when I tweaked the 'tatty edge' (good description Bob) that the eyecap popped off ...apologised deeply to Surahi and have been extra vigilant ever since .... |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 22:44:41 If its just a recent shed the cloudy liquid used to separate the old skin may still be a bit left over, I know if you get hold of a freshly shed snake they do feel a bit sticky. Best thing to do it get a damp bit of kitchen roll and very gently with very little pressure at all wipe the eye, it may just be residue. A retained eyecap looks like crackled effect usually a tatty edge to them too. |

Sounds like Slinky, Chris..i'll keep an eye on him and I just sprayed him and the warm end with water before covering the faun with hubby's shirt lol
Its nothing obvious so maybe just me worrying. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 21:21:24 one of franks eyes looks a little cloudy in some light but cant see any sign of a retained cap an he shed a few weeks ago so would assume it would go dry/wrinkly if it was an eye cap |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 21:05:56 It looks like a clear film over the eye, no sign of skin surrounding both are shiney and black..its just the film that got me worrying. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 20:55:37 Ah, typical - mine are always losing their specs. Even in a really good shed they manage to tear the mask off before shedding the rest.
I can't see any sign of a retained eyecap from the pic, but just keep an eye on him. If there are any tiny shreds or flakes of skin visible round the eye, this could mean that the eyecap is still on. I believe that it can look dull too.
But, all being well, this won't be the case. I have dealt with retained eyecaps but can't call myself a total expert - could be a good idea to get a clearer pic, and hopefully someone more experienced will be along soon.
But hope there's no cause for worry. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 20:47:42 Unfortunately he had already shed his head and half of his neck..i'll try and find it but its doubful as it was small pieces. |

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 20:41:13 It's hard to see from the photo, I'm afraid ...did you examine his 'mask' when he shed it? The two 'bubbles' that covered his eyecaps ought to be plainly visible and easy to feel - if in place in the shed he should be fine. There are rare instances of retained eyecaps building up, but I think you would have noticed that before if that was the case.
All the best. |
