Hi all,
Had her in the garden just now and all was fine, she was hanging round my neck quite happily and all of a sudden she's started to let this mucus like, saliva like substance drip from her mouth.
Very worried. No whistling or anything but just this transparent, snot/saliva like substance coming out. What should I do? |

I was thinking maybe a reaction to something in the grass, not necessarily to the grass itself but maybe some chemical or even organic fertilizer and moss killer had at some point been used or some something along those lines and as a response to getting an unfamiliar substance an immune response was triggered, bit like runny noses around cats etc in people sensitive fur. The right response was a trip to the vets though, just to be sure that it was a short term reaction and not an illness.
Also a great thing knowing a vet that you are comfortable taking your animals to as you trust them so a worthwhile trip even if its just for that. |

Took her to vet today. Was great as I found a local one that seemed very knowledgeable, friendly and didn't try and usher us out or anything like that. Was very thorough.
Said as well as above could also be an individual specific allergic reaction. Said she was in fine health other than that. Also asked him a few questions about my terrapins which he was more than happy to answer. |

Just be sure to find a vet that treats reptiles,My local vets are useless on anything reptile related |

Well in the grass she did a semi periscope (about 45 degrees). She often periscopes though so I didn't think anything of it at the time. Will take her to the vets but the idea of a reaction to the rodent smell / taste in the garden makes some sense as she is overdue a feed and very hungry. She didn't seem to be in any discomfort when she was doing it, she was round my neck with her head hanging down my chest and she opened her mouth a little bit and let it drip out.
Still, better safe than sorry, going to phone up the vet first thing tomorrow and take her along.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to what they will do / suggest? |

Keep an eye out for her holding her head up (stargazing) on hanging down from a branch or ledge - signs of draining mucus from the lungs = RI I'm afraid. Definitely worth a check over at the vets, but I'm beginning to think it could be a reaction to be able to smell / taste rodents in the garden - they "lube up" for lack of a better term, to assist in swallowing prey - but this doesnt usually occur until after a strike! Interesting.
Touch wood she'll be ok though :) |

The Mucus has definitely gone away now but I'd rather be safe than sorry. She's definitely hungry but I'll hold off the food until the vet if that seems to be the general consensus.
Am looking for a vet now. |

I'm not sure what the experts would say, but if it were me....I would hold off on feeding her until you can get her in to the vet. That way, you can tell the vet that she hasn't eaten since her last feed and he can check her out without that being a problem. :) |

Have had a look at her just now and she seems 100%. Should I feed her today?
Oh yeah, nothing been sprayed on the lawn recently. |

I third the vet check. Definitely sounds RI-ish to me. :( I do hope she's ok, RIs in Royals is bad, bad news. |

In addition to the above, she was just out on the lawn right now in the sun for all of a minute. Could i be some sort of reaction? Back in her hide now and she's moving around and in all respects looking very normal. However if I let her go into a position where her head is down then a little bit drips out.
I.E. Gravity seems to be making it come out- she's in viv right now and nothing is coming out. |
