I am getting a female royal on monday with the intention of breeding her with my male when they are ready. What I dont know is what age/ weight should they both be before attempting to breed them. I dont want to do it to young. |

Thanks for all the input guys. I saw that add the other day as well Vazzza. I am going rather close to there to get the female I am getting as well but I am getting lots of other stuff for a better price so I guess I will just have to be patient. |

I would go for 3 years old female, that will give her time to mature and be of the correct weight.
As for the male...well lots of differences in opinions on this but males have been bred from being 400+g's. Size and age is not as important as for a female IMO, as they do not have as much to do. |

I agree that waiting longer seems to be best. I've just read on another website that they have used males at 450g's to mate, sperm production starts at about 400g's (and i'm assuming a certain age but it didn't state). So how long is a piece of string? lol

I have seen a bit of conflicting information as well. I think it would probably be better to leave them longer as opposed to trying them sooner. I am not really any where near the breeding stage as my male is only about 120g and the female i will be getting is about 160g so I have got a long wait ahead of me but I like to try and find out as much informantion as I can before I get into it. |

Russ, you've just stepped into an ongoing debate 
I've read that the males can be used as early as 600-800g's. BUT (oh yes, you knew that was coming) i've also heard that the bigger the male the more sperm they produce, so a male of 1200g's would be better than a smaller 'model'.
It sounds like you are further along the breeding route than I am anyway, as I don't have 1 of the pair yet. But if I was going to do it tomorrow, I'd be looking at a minimum for the female at 1500g and male at 1000g - age wise, who knows

Ideally the female should be 3 years old and at least 1500g in weight...
some do breed a little younger if they reach weight, but not many take the risk...remember she has to develop inside to  |
