Hi Everyone,
My name is Sherrie, my partner Adrian. We are picking up our first Royal this week... We are both really excited. I found this website and have found it very useful and thought I should join.
We have reasearch alot about Royals before we decided to get one, however we do not know what we are looking for to ensure the snake is in good health, the right weight, size etc. Can anyone help?
He is 10 months old, he appears well, however he does have a scar which the present owner said he did on a faulty heat mat and that this should disapear after a couple of sheadings. He is said to be a good eater, and feeds every 7 days.
We fell in love with him when we saw him and decided to purchase him, I'm just a little worried with it being a private sale and not from a pet store/reptile shop.
I really just wanted any tips to look out for to ensure he is in good health, what size roughly he should be for a 10 month old, or maybe it is a good idea I take him to a vets to be checked over, weighed etc?
Many thanks Sherrie |

Hi Sherrie, welcome to the forum.
For a 10 month old Royal eating well I'd expect it to be >500g (I use digital kitchen scales).
Check that his eyes are clear and not sunken.
Check for mites (tiny black creatures) especially between the belly scales (you should be able to gently twist or get a nail under to look - gently!)
If you hold him halfway along he should be able to support the front half of his body's weight and head.
Check for any signs of retained shed (especially around the eyes and the tip of the tail).
The scar, is it actually a scar or still a wound?
I wouldn't be worried about it being a private sale, most private breeders/owners know a lot more than most Pet Shops.
Good luck.

Hello Sherrie
I agree with BE- private sellers all the way (and not just because they are usually cheaper ) |

Hi and welcome to forums c:
I live just outside of Manchester so I coulda helped you out, however I am a total newb to snakes also so wouldnt be any help lol. Good luck though. Also, it's QUITE a way from Bolton, but if you're ever in the Bury area I'd say take a trip into Prestwich and visit Viper and Vine, there's some reps in there and it's nice to go in to window shop. :p |

The guy I'm buying off did seem to know what he was talking about, he said he has kept various snakes over the years. i think its just because its all new to me.
I've just tried to add a picture of him to my profile using photobucket..not sure if it will turn out...here goes. |
