Hi guys. Sorry for the god-awful subject title but I couldn't help myself .
When I bought Sherman's viv it included a UVB tube setup. I'm a little confused as to whether I need to install it or not. Some say yes and some say no. What do you lot think?
p.s. I won't be upset if I don't need it cos then I won't have to rip the back of the viv to fit it. |

I agree, Evra is happy enough without UV. She didn't even like the energy saving bulb I put in. It was too bright for her. Got a green bulb in at the minute and she likes that. |

Cheers guys. That's what I thought. I think they sell the same viv set-up for their Bosc Monitors too.
I might try to find a low wattage red tube so that I can watch Sherman at night. |

neither do i. the problem with many pet shops is they tend to stock a 'one viv fits all' kinda thing only in different sizes, that's where specialist shops with truly knowledgeable staff really come into their own. |

would there be any adverse effects of using a UV anyway? i ask as witht the setup i bought it also came with a uv to simulate the day time rather than an ordinary spot bulb... now the guy that i get all my stuff from is a very experienced snake keeper (also has DWA) and shop owner and he says although with snakes UV is not needed he likes to have it there anyway as in the wild they would be getting a little bit of UVA/UVB etc from the sun (although they will be hiding like they should be) tbh i dont wana stand on anyones toes but it does make sense to me that they should have everything they would have access to in the wild....
the reason that made me no ask the question is that after talking to a mate last night who keeps snakes he said he would never use UV as it can kill snakes? is this true or is he just exagerating for abit...
not want to start an argument just curious :-)

They have no need to it as they are nocturnal and hide down burrows etc during the day. I have also heard of some snakes eyes being affected and even leading to blindness with too much UV.

yeh i understand they dont NEED it, ive been watching mine and he does hide away all through the day so if hes hidden i dont see an issue? i dunno im abit confused tbh its annoying as theres so many different opinions on husbadary! lol
why would he use them with all his snakes if it could be harmful? i ask as hes been in the business for 20+ years and says hes used them with no problem form day 1. also says that he thinks it can help with there colouration? soon as he puts them in a viv with UV there colours start to show abit more? |

UV light does reflect colour well, just look at Rainbow Boas under it!
I think you can get low UV (2%?) which is probably better. |

yeh thats what he said, so i got a 2% jungle one, he also said that tbh you could just leave it once its past its 6 - 8 months and use it as just a light source to keep the day/night cycle going.
so you think it should be ok?
if theres an proof that it can harm/damage my royal i would remove it straight away as i would never wnat any harm to come to my reps. |
