My dearest brother went and impulse bought a corn today, from a shop that shall remain nameless.
The lady there was a t**t IMO.
okay so i am not an expert or anything, in fact i have never owned a corn so i might be totally wrong (feel free to correct me if i am, i wont mind).
this corn is the same age as my royal (both born july 08 and it is the litterally thinner than a pencil. i am not even exagerating.
that's besides the point though, as i said i dont own a corn and have had minimal experience with them so maybe they are supposed to be that tiny at that age, i was just surprised as my royal is easily 5x bigger if not more so.
Anyway, on his impulse buy, she asked if he had a heat mat, but didn't bother asking if he had a thermostat.
he doesnt. i have had to lend him the spare one i have that i was setting up for my baby crb that's coming soon.
when i asked him if he had a thermostat he said "no, but it's okay i have never used one"
so i went off on a rant and proceeded to show him various threads on the dark side and pictures of what "could" happen to his new snakey.
He had NO idea what a moist hide was.
so i had to provide him with the equipment for that for when it's needed.
and i had to lend him a digital thermometer/hygrometer.
as well as substrate (aspen) (the lady sold him sand!), wood, water bowl, 2 hides and silk plant.
basically everything that i have bought for my crb.
and the viv she convinced him to buy was twice the size he needed.
i am so annoyed.
he came in saying "oo oo look what i bought, it was only £35!"
great, i say, so because of his stupid impulse buy and the fact that he didn't do ANY research whatsoever (despite me talking constantly about my own stupidity with Ra)I had to provide him with about £40 worth of equipment!
AND!!!! another thing!!!!!
he also bought a chile rose T.
phoned me up saying "is a chile rose okay for a beginner?" yes i say, "good, cos i just bought one" thank god he didnt come home with the colbolt blue as well.
aparently, according to the woman in the pet shop, if he provides his CHILE ROSE sub adult with a water bowl, he is being cruel and it is against animal welfare policies to do so.
to the point where she refused to sell him a water bowl.
she told him to instead "mist the tank twice a day".
the tank i would like to point out was very condensed up.
ooo i am so cross and so fed up of stuff like this.
i have now had to lend him two of my books and i have pointed him in the direction of various forums.
i also have to help him feed his baby corn as he doesnt know how to. (he was going to just litterally throw the pinky in there frozen)
fortunately he does seem to be listening to me, so if i get it wrong i blame you lot since i spend all day every day on random forums (including this one)reading your advice

anyway sorry for the rant, but i feel all better now

*edit: forgot to add, he had two adult corns about a year ago for a couple of months, with heatmat, no stat and not feeding them properly. i am so glad he sold them!

oh for those who dont know, chile roses are desert tarantulas. a high humidity can kill them, they can get infections in the booklungs. it is't BAD to provide a water bowl, i always did, as long as it is cleaned daily, disinfected once a week and i always had a slate ramp in it (also cleaned and disinfected)(never a sponge as some people suggest) the tank should not condense up at all, not even if you have to raise the humidity slightly during shedding time. and misting is not recomended at all for chile roses. grrrrrrr

also i realise this isn't too different to what i did with Ra, what made me cross is that brother dearest didn't listen to anything i said all the times i was talking about Ra and how you should research before buying. And how the woman in the shop was giving bad advice.

Hi Cat...;-)

Does your brother have access to a pc, if so direct him to TCS the corn snake forum...

Loads of good people on there as here and a great care sheet as well..

Hope you get your stuff back for your CRB.

My youngest corn is almost a year and she is a lot smaller than Quetza, but went missing for a few months hence her size..

Looking at Nia you would think she was only about six months old..

Finally, is a good job your brothers corn has you in its corner;-)

lol..good for you, how old is your brother?

I suppose if he gets bored with the corn, then it would be another snake for you....

he's 22.
i am secretly hoping he gets bored and lets me have it since i gave him a tarantula recently that's worth twice the price :) LOL
though he did say the shop where he got his from has more coming up next week, at £35 each. is that a good price for corns? these will be hatchlings

You would expect a Corn to be considerably thinner, but thinner than a pencil doesn't sound good.

A lot of Pet Shops don't recommend thermostats as they don't want to put people off a sale by making it too expensive.

Corns don't really need a moist hide as Royals do, mine has never had one.

Good on you helping out.
