Am still dithering about whether to go on an infrared or a ceramic..
i like infrared, but worried about having to use a heat mat for belly heat..
so whats your preference?
anyone use both and found one better than the other? |

with infrared/ceramics you dont have to use mats...
from wot i understand is that they are both IR heat sources just that one is light emitting and one isnt. The reason they are recommended for large bodyied snakes is the fact that the IR can penetrate the snake and heat to the core of it...
as for which one to use its personnal preference...why dont you get dimmers and one of each heat sources and try them both...then there is no wasted money on stats... |

I hear you Daz
But from my understanding the pulse keeps the temps more stable and better than a dimmer, as the dimmer does not work till the temp has dropped and i would be worried about fluctuating temps..
Am i right or wrong? |

both are very accurate stats and hold temps very well. I dont have dimmers so cant comment but my PP temp seems to hold them bang on...
Lots of different opinions on stats...and which is best for wot but you will find that there are people that use PP and dimmers for ceramics and are vey happy with them... |

As far as I understand it pulse transmits little pulses of power when needed to keep the heat at the right temp.
Dimmers get the heat up to what you set it to by going full power then dim down to a lower power output to keep the temp at the right level.
Think of them as a dimmer light switch in a house. You dim it down to the right level, rather than turning it on and off quickly.
Bah, im crap at explaining things.
I think dimmers are the most accurate, mine keeps to say 89.4 without dropping, im guessing you'd see a pulse drop to say 89.2 then go back to 89.4 etc
Im just guessing though, never used a pulse.
The higher price of dimmers kinda makes me think they are more accurate too. |

i've only used these on mats so far and i've found both the dimmer and the pulse very accurate
i've decided to use the dimmer on the reptile radiator i've got for Marilyn, but not for any reason i can put my finger on!! |

Dimmers are the most accurate, PP not far behind. |

i would not use an on off.....
ok...well i got a pulse cos i think the ceramics would probably hold heat better.. |

ok, i have two of the vivs ready in my stack, but i am using an infrared on a dimmer in one...and am struggling to get the temps above 80...(which i think is around 26) in the warm end..
if it stays like this then for a royal it would not be warm enough would it...?
Do i need a higher wattage bulb, i think this one is a 100 but not sure..
its just crept up to 80...but i am wondering if the temps will increase once i have the other two vivs in operation...or if i should get a reflector.
Daz where are you...lol.. |

Where is your probe and where the thermometer probe? (or are you using a dial thermometer?)
Is the thermostat turned to max? |

and how tall is the viv? ie. is the heatsource too far away from where the heat needs to be?
i've given up with my ceramic at the moment!!! reptile rad is working a treat for Marilyn though |
